TRAVERSE CITY, Mich. — A quiet Saturday afternoon exploded into horror when at least 11 people were stabbed in a violent rampage at a Walmart in northern Michigan. Six of the victims are currently in critical condition, officials confirmed.
Grand Traverse County Sheriff Michael Shea called the incident a random act of violence, saying, “Eleven is 11 too many, but thank God it wasn’t more.” A suspect was taken into custody shortly after the attack.
Chaos in the Aisles
Witnesses described scenes of panic and disbelief as customers and employees fled for safety. Tiffany DeFell, 36, said she was in the parking lot with her sister when the chaos began: “It was really scary. Me and my sister were just freaking out,” she told reporters. “This is something you see out of the movies. It’s not what you expect to see where you’re living.”
Emergency vehicles quickly flooded the area, and first responders worked to stabilize the victims. The store was evacuated and remained closed pending investigation.
Hospital Response
Munson Healthcare confirmed via social media that all 11 victims were transported to their hospital in Traverse City. Spokesperson Megan Brown said six were in critical condition, while five remained in serious condition late Saturday night.
Authorities have not yet released the name of the suspect or the motive for the attack. State and local police, as well as federal agencies, are assisting with the ongoing investigation.
A Community in Shock
The attack has sent shockwaves through the Traverse City community, known more for its scenic lakefronts than for violent crime. Local leaders and residents expressed grief and solidarity as more information about the victims was expected to emerge in the coming days.
