In order to ensure the authenticity of the movie, Daigeler was inspired by some of the pop stars in real life. Some of the pop stars that Daigeler was inspired by include Beyoncé, Madonna, Taylor Swift, and Dua Lipa.
However, on the other hand, the costume designer team tried to ensure that their designs gave the characters a distinct identity, as opposed to copying any existing fashion trends. In this way, the costumes remained familiar yet unique, thereby enhancing the underlying themes in the film.
The Power of Collaboration
Costume design for Mother Mary included contributions not only by Daigeler but from actors as well as designers who worked on the film. Actress Michaela Coel personally contributed her input as she spent some time at the workshops where she could observe how costumes were being designed.
