Amazon Is Now America’s Biggest Company
After constant expansion and minimal disruption, Amazon has officially claimed the title of America’s largest company, overtaking Walmart as a whole. “For nearly two decades, Walmart WMT -1.51%decrease; red down pointing triangle has been the country’s largest company by revenue, a status it touted to prospective hires, employees and suppliers,” according to The Wall Street Journal.
Amazon’s ascent to the top did not happen overnight. Amazon was built on technological investments, and they wanted to disrupt themselves before competition could catch up. As it stands today, Amazon is a company that has built itself around computing, entertainment, logistics, AI and more.
Global Powerhouse
When Amazon was founded in 1994, the company had begun as a little bookstore, one that had sought to harness the potential of the internet to deliver books in a much faster and convenient manner than traditional retailers. By the 2000s, Amazon had expanded into music, general merchandise, and electronics as a whole.
In 2006, Amazon launched Amazon Web Services (AWS), its cloud computing division that would become one of the company’s most profitable segments. AWS enabled businesses to store data and run applications on remote servers, a breakthrough that revolutionized how enterprises operate. While competitors lagged, AWS surged ahead, becoming a backbone for digital transformation across the globe.

Key Moments
Several pivotal developments shaped Amazon’s rise and set the stage for its eventual overtaking of Walmart:
1. AWS Dominance:
AWS was a cash cow that had funded many of the projects that Amazon had undertook. AWS was something that generated a much higher profit margin for Amazon, giving them stability and influence within the tech world.
2. Prime Ecosystem:
The launch of Prime in the middle of the 2000s, this was a subscription for free two-day shipping, had evolved into something much broader, streaming video, music, and faster delivery options.
3. Logistics Revolution:
They also decided to invest into logistics, which included fulfillment center, delivery services including cargo planes, and more. They reduced their reliance on third-party carriers, they gained a lot of speed, and many crucial advantages.
4. Diversification into Tech and Media:
They then decided to go into Prime Video, Whole Foods Market, and smart home technology with Alexa.
Over time, all of these pillars as aforementioned helped build an extremely robust ecosystem that was able to generate a lot of revenue. “Amazon gained the top spot thanks to its cloud computing business, Bloomberg reports. Without Amazon Web Services, the company would have been far behind Walmart with $588 billion in revenue last year. “This is a hollow victory,” says Kirthi Kalyanam, executive director of the Retail Management Institute at Santa Clara University. “Amazon didn’t beat Walmart in the retail game. It just beat them in revenue by launching a new business Walmart doesn’t operate in,” according to newser.
Why This Moment Matters
Their surpassing of Walmart is significant not just in financial terms, but in what it symbolizes about the evolution of American business. For decades, Walmart represented broad-based retail strength rooted in physical presence. Its thousands of stores across the United States fostered community connections and made it an iconic part of the American consumer experience.
Commerce began to shift increasingly into the online world, which was even more accelerated by the COVID-19 pandemic, many platforms like Amazon capitalized on these changing consumer behaviors. Many shoppers began to feel comfortable and got accustomed to just ordering something from the online marketplace, and never having to step foot into a store.
Challenges
Their rise has not been without controversy. Labor advocates have criticized the company’s warehouse working conditions and labor practices. Regulators have scrutinized its market power, particularly regarding how it competes with third-party sellers on its own platform. Privacy concerns have emerged around data collection practices tied to Alexa devices and online behavior tracking.
Meanwhile, antitrust authorities in the United States and Europe have examined whether their dominance stifles competition. Some lawmakers and consumer advocates argue that the company’s control over digital marketplaces gives it unfair leverage over suppliers and smaller businesses.
What is Next
As Amazon stares down its new status as America’s biggest company, it faces both opportunities and responsibilities. The company has signaled a continued focus on innovation, including expanded investment in generative AI, robotics, healthcare delivery and international markets.
Yet for now, Amazon’s achievement stands as a testament to 17 years of strategic expansion, from its humble beginnings as an online bookseller to a global technology and commerce leader that now eclipses its biggest retail rival. Technological change is constantly accelerating, which brings a huge power of innovation.
