A Nation Deeply Divided

Tension have increased between the U.S and Iran in late February 2026. A CBS News poll has revealed a nation that is divided. Much of the public is anxious over the warfare attack on the Middle East.

The results of those polls were released before reports of the major combat operation. The results of the poll suggested that Americans view a nuclear armed Iran as a significant threat with very little room for debate.

Divisions

The poll highlights a division in how the public views the administration’s handling of Tehran. Republicans are overwhelmingly supporting the recent military pressure.

Many are expressing confidence that the use of force is the only way to prevent Iran from developing a weapon. The majority of Democrats and Independents are not in favor of the strike and fear that the U.S. actions will trigger retaliation rather than a diplomatic breakthrough.

Escalation Concerns

The biggest takeaway from an escalated warfare attack is the concern over the public safety. Approximately 60% of Americans are expressing intense worriedness about the warfare attack that could lead to a even much bigger war.

Key findings from the data included two thirds of respondents believing that the President should obtain congressional authorization before engaging in further military action.

Only a minority of those surveyed believe that military strikes will successfully end Iran’s nuclear ambitions in the long term.

Most American’s expect Iran to respond by targeting the U.S. More violence will occur rather than returning to the negotiating table.

As the U.S. makes its presence in the region, the polls suggest the American public is braced for conflict but remains skeptical of its outcome. While the threat of a warfare attack on Iran serves as a major concern and the strategy for addressing it remains a national debate from different perspectives.
