Parents and Educators Grapple With Legacy Questions in Prince George’s County
For parents in Prince George’s County in Maryland, there is a dilemma in light of new accusations that are coming forth against César Chávez, the legendary labor leader and civil rights activist whose name is given to a local middle school in the area.
The new accusations that have been spreading quickly online and among social circles have brought many concerns and questions among many in the area, even going so far as to cause some to question how César Chávez is being portrayed in school curricula.
The school in question is César Chávez Middle School in Prince George’s County in Maryland, where students, parents, and teachers alike are all having a hard time dealing with the dilemma of how to reconcile César Chávez’s legendary contributions to history in America in light of new accusations against him.
“It’s hard to know what to think,” said a parent of a seventh-grader who goes to school there. “We’ve always told our kids that he was a hero who stood up for farm workers. Now we’re hearing things that don’t fit that narrative.”
