David Gilmour’s Guitar Sells for Record-Breaking $14.55 Million at Auction

The most renowned guitar in rock music history has just broken the record books after selling for a staggering sum of money. David Gilmour’s Guitar the “Black Strat”, sold for $14.55 million in an auction, making it the priciest guitar sold up until now. The historic sale was conducted by Christie’s in New York City as part of its auction of items from The Jim Irsay Collection, which is renowned worldwide.

The sale of this guitar broke the previous world record for the priciest guitar sold in an auction, reflecting the value of these musical instruments that helped create some of the most iconic rock music recordings of all time.

A Guitar That Defined Pink Floyd’s Sound

The guitar that is referred to as the “Black Strat” is a Fender Stratocaster model of 1969, which Gilmour bought in 1970 at a music shop called Manny’s Music in New York.

The guitarist started using this guitar immediately after purchasing it, not only in the recording studio but also live on stage. The guitar eventually became Gilmour’s go-to guitar during Pink Floyd’s heydays.

The Black Strat was featured on some of Pink Floyd’s most popular albums, including:

  • The Dark Side of the Moon (1973)
  • Wish You Were Here (1975)
  • Animals (1977)
  • The Wall (1979)

The guitar also featured some of the most recognizable guitar parts in rock music, including Gilmour’s memorable guitar solo in the song “Comfortably Numb.”

The guitar is therefore seen not only as a musical instrument but also as a cultural artifact of the “Golden Age” of progressive rock music.

From $4 Million to $14.55 Million

This is not the first time the Black Strat has been in the spotlight for a high-profile auction sale.

In 2019, Gilmour auctioned the instrument through Christie’s as part of a massive charity auction of over 100 guitars from the musician’s personal collection. The sale was for charity, with the instrument selling for $3.975 million, a world record for a guitar auction sale at the time.

The buyer was Jim Irsay, a billionaire owner of the Indianapolis Colts, who is a passionate collector of historical music memorabilia.

After the death of the billionaire owner of the Colts, the famous collection was again auctioned off. In March 2026, the sale of the Black Strat far exceeded the expectations of the auction sale experts, who had estimated the sale price of the instrument to range from $2 million to $4 million.

However, the sale price was much higher than the estimated price, with the instrument selling for $14,550,000, more than triple the previous sale price. The buyer’s identity is not known.

Breaking a Legendary Record

Prior to the latest sale of the Black Strat, the most expensive guitar ever sold at auction was owned by the late Kurt Cobain of the grunge rock band Nirvana.

Kurt Cobain’s 1959 Martin D-18E acoustic guitar, which was used during the famous MTV Unplugged concert by Nirvana in 1993, was sold for around $6 million in 2020.

Gilmour’s guitar was sold for more than twice the price of Cobain’s, thus creating a new benchmark for the collectibles industry for the sale of musical instruments.

A Guitar Constantly Modified

A major factor contributing to the uniqueness of the Black Strat is the many ways in which it was transformed throughout Gilmour’s career.

Contrary to the majority of legendary guitars, which are left untouched, the Strat was modified many times throughout the years, from its pickups, neck, electronics, to its appearance.

Some of the notable features of the Strat:

  • Many neck replacements over the years
  • Custom pickups and electronics
  • Distinctive black pickguard installed in 1974
  • A mini-toggle switch for tonal variety

Many of these modifications enabled Gilmour to perfect the tone, which was synonymous with Pink Floyd’s music.

Despite the many modifications, the Strat managed to maintain its originality, making it instantly recognizable.

A Star of the Jim Irsay Collection

The Black Strat was part of the Jim Irsay Collection, which is one of the most significant collections of music memorabilia, sports memorabilia, and historical artifacts in the world.

Some of the instruments that were part of the collection were:

  • Eric Clapton
  • John Lennon
  • George Harrison
  • Jerry Garcia

The 2026 auction that included Gilmour’s guitar raised tens of millions of dollars for the sale. The event proved to be a significant one as it raised many records for music memorabilia.

Why the Black Strat Matters

“The astronomical price paid for the Black Strat signifies more than its scarcity.”

It is a symbol of a significant era in rock music history and a tribute to the musical talents of David Gilmour, whose playing style and approach have become synonymous with rock music, particularly progressive rock music.

Few musical instruments are as closely linked with a musician as this one.

To Pink Floyd enthusiasts, the guitar is inextricably linked with their music, having appeared on stage for many years and featured on some of their most iconic music in the 20th century.

A New Chapter for a Rock Icon

The Black Strat has begun a new chapter in its history with this latest sale.

The Black Strat has had a varied history since it was used on the stages of Pink Floyd concerts and has passed from the hands of the best collectors. It has now become the most expensive guitar in history, with a price tag of $14.55 million.

The Black Strat is not just a simple collector’s item; it is a testament to one of the most creative associations between a musician and his instrument, and a testament that the cultural value of classic rock continues to appreciate over time.
