Trump Goes to War With Iran

When President Donald Trump ran for office, he stated that he would Make America Great Again. One of his most recent foreign policy pledges was simply no new wars. For many of his supporters, especially those in the U.S. military, President Donald Trump promised them to put America First. But in early March 2026, Trump’s administration ordered a major warfare attack against Iran. President Trump demonstrated a shifting direction towards his original promises.

No New Wars

During the 2024 election, and his presidency, Trump repeatedly stated that he was a leader and would avoid any conflict in the Middle East. Trump’s campaign stated that he would keep the U.S. out of new conflict and would much rather focus on U.S. priorities like economic growth, immigration, and trade.

Donald Trumps statements deeply resonated with Republicans who were over military campaigns in Iraq and Afghanistan. The president promised no more endless wars and would only focus on peace. Donald Trump promised all this to gain support from  traditional conservatives, libertarians, and even some independents who thought they would take a break from interventionist policies of past administrations.

From Promises to Conflict

All of the president’s promises changed in late February and early March 2026, when the U.S. and Israel launched a warfare attack on Iran. The attack killed Iran’s Supreme Leader and struck numerous military bases. After the warfare attack, Iran launched a retaliatory strike against Israel and the U.S.

White House officials named this military operation as “Operation Epic Fury” and stated that is was necessary to dismantle Iran’s nuclear missiles. They stated it was to enable capabilities and ultimately protect the U.S. Donald Trump’s  press team argued that long standing hostility from Tehran is what justified this decisive action. The administration described the attack as a non traditional war, but as a targeted attack to demonstrate the U.S. hostile power.

Critics and even Trump supporters realize that Trump departed from his earlier promises to avoid new military conflicts. Trump’s “no new wars” seems ironic with this years being the most serious U.S. military attack on the Middle East. Other wars like the ones in Iraq and Afghanistan don’t compare to the recent attack on Iran.

Make America Great Again

The Trump administration has exposed the division within his previous MAGA promises. Some conservatives and political activists have stated that the President betrayed the America First promises that helped get him to the position he is in now.

Public figures like commentator Matt Walsh and former Representative Marjorie Taylor Greene have publicly shamed the military’s actions. They have also accused Trump of prioritizing foreign interests over American troops and taxpayers.

Taylor Greene stated that the war represents a shift away from his Make America Great Again campaign. She stated that the president should focus on the growth of the U.S. rather than foreign issues.

Trump Supporters

Not all Trump supporters are against him. Some supporters are backing the president’s decisions. Trump supporters are arguing that Iran has been acting very hostile towards the U.S. Iran has had support from militant groups all across the region. Trump supporters often express national security concerns and state it was necessary to dismantle Iran’s military infrastructures. Trump supporters see the warfare attack as a preventable move against a possible nuclear attack on the U.S.

Supporters who are backing Trump state that Iran should not possess nuclear weapons. These supporters are arguing that dismantling Iran’s operations will make the Middle East more stable in the long run. They state that this will also help protect U.S. major interests.

This warfare attack has also created a national pushback. Members of Congress from both parties have expressed concerns about the lack of authority that congress has on military action.

This highlights a major constitutional question about the president’s authority on major military decisions without any approval from lawmakers.

People aren’t really on board with the warfare. Americans are indecisive on whether the war is a good idea, but the majority do not agree. After America has been stuck in extensive wars like Iraq and Afghanistan for 20 years, Americans are tired of the fight overseas.

Young and Independent voters are the most against the warfare attack.

A Broader Foreign Policy Shift?

Even when Trump promised no more wars and because of the U.S current alliances, the president got pulled back into a conflict he said he would avoid. This warfare attack changes what it means to be a MAGA supporter. Choosing to go to war with Iran is the biggest turn around Trump has made since his campaign promises. Trump forced his followers to choose between the promises he made and the reality of what he is actually doing.
