From Courtroom Controversy to Political Campaign

An ex-ICE lawmaker, who gained nationwide attention after telling a federal judge that she was overwhelmed by her job is now seeking a new position in public office. The former lawyer, Julie Le, announced her bid for Congress in the state of Minnesota after being removed from a government legal job earlier this year.

“A former U.S. Attorney removed from her post after telling a judge ‘this job sucks’ during a Minnesota immigration hearing is running for U.S. Congress as a Democrat against incumbent Rep. Ilhan Omar,” according to CBS News.

Le, a former attorney for the U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE), gained media attention during a heated courtroom exchange when she complained about the job she was doing as an immigration lawyer.

She told a judge that her job sucked because of the immigration system. Le now wants to use her experience to gain a position in public office. She announced her bid for Congress.

Courtroom Remarks That Sparked National Attention

The controversy, however, started during a federal court hearing in Minnesota earlier in 2026. During the hearing, Le told the judge that she was overwhelmed by the number of cases she was handling and that she was dissatisfied with the system she was working in.

At one point during the hearing, she was quoted as saying that “the system sucks” and that “this job sucks,” according to transcripts from the court session.

Le was temporarily tasked with managing a number of immigration-related cases that arose as a result of a major enforcement drive in Minnesota. According to reports, she was tasked with handling dozens of cases in a short period of time, most of which she was not adequately trained for.

Pressure Inside Immigration Enforcement

The exchange in court highlighted the broader discontent of government lawyers dealing with immigration cases. For Le’s part, she had allegedly handled as many as 88 cases in less than a month, a heavy workload for a government lawyer. “This week, Ms. Le announced that she had left her job and aspired to fix the immigration “system’s failures” as a lawmaker. She is running as a Democrat for the seat held by Representative Ilhan Omar, a Democrat who has served in Congress since 2019,” as reported by The New York Times.

Le even went so far as to tell the judge during the court hearing that she would not complain if she was cited in contempt of court because she would have time to rest from her workload.

The judge in the case recognized the burden on the lawyers but pointed out the need to follow court orders, especially in the matter of the release of detained illegal aliens whose detention was ruled illegal.

The case highlighted the conflict between the judiciary and federal immigration authorities, especially in dealing with the high volume of cases resulting from stepped-up immigration enforcement.

Removal From Government Role

After the comments she made in the courtroom, the Department of Homeland Security labeled Le’s comments as unprofessional and took her out of the case she was handling as a lawyer.

Her removal was announced just hours after the case that she was handling attracted so much attention. The case also brought up the stress that exists within the agencies that carry out the enforcement of immigration laws. Several prosecutors and legal personnel were said to have resigned around the same time due to their frustration regarding the detention cases and the court orders.

The case was also seen as an indication of the structural challenges that the immigration court system was facing.

Entering the Political Arena

Despite the controversy she has been involved in regarding her comments in court, Le is now running for elected office. Le has announced that she will be running as a Democrat in Minnesota’s congressional race.

Her goal is to run against the current Representative from Minnesota’s Fifth Congressional District, Ilhan Omar.

Le has stated that her focus will be on immigration reform, education funding, and access to health care during her campaign. She has also stated that her focus will be on providing more financial aid for college and arts and music programs in public schools.

This is a big change from being a government attorney to running for office.

Immigration Policy at the Center of Debate

Le’s decision to seek Congress comes at a time when the country is in the midst of an intense debate on how to address the immigration situation. There have been federal enforcement actions and mass arrests in some parts of the country. This has led to an increase in the number of court cases and challenges.

The opponents of the enforcement policy claim that it has overwhelmed the courts and detention centers. The proponents of the policy believe that it is essential to uphold the immigration laws of the United States and maintain national security. Le believes that her experience within the system influenced her views on the need for change. Her campaign will focus on the failures of the immigration system.

A Race That Could Draw National Attention

The race for Minnesota’s Fifth Congressional District has the potential to be one of the more interesting political contests in the state. Minnesota, particularly around the Minneapolis region, has been at the epicenter of some of the more publicized debates on immigration and law enforcement in recent years.

If Le decides to officially enter the race, she will be forced to compete with an established politician while dealing with the fallout from her courtroom comments and dismissal from government service.

Political analysts believe that this race has the potential to be interesting because of Le’s unusual path from frustrated government lawyer to courtroom to politician.

Looking Ahead

As the campaign gets underway, it is expected that Le’s outburst in the courtroom and her removal from her position in government will continue to be a central theme of the political discourse.

While some may see her outburst as a genuine expression of a system that is broken, others may see it as a display of a lack of professionalism that is expected from a federal attorney.

Regardless, it is evident that the outburst has made a previously unknown immigration attorney a household name, and it will be interesting to see whether it helps or hinders her campaign as it progresses.
