Explosion at MOL’s Tiszaújváros Petrochemical Plant Kills One, Injures Nine
TISZAÚJVÁROS, Hungary – A massive explosion occurred on Friday in a petrochemical plant run by Hungarian oil and gas company MOL, resulting in the death of one person and injuries to others in Tiszaújváros, an eastern Hungarian town.
The tragic event highlights the importance of safety measures at MOL’s Tiszaújváros facility.
The incident happened while the firm was bringing back the plant called Olefin 1, which is a major facility utilized for the manufacturing of ethylene that can be used in making plastics.
Blast Occurrence during Plant Restarting Operations
In accordance with MOL, the explosion occurred at the time when the plant operators started re-operating Olefin 1 after conducting repairs. In this regard, it is imperative to state that the occurrence of an explosion due to a blast of hydrocarbon gas occurred in the plant pipe, causing widespread damage and triggering a fire outbreak.
Upon receiving calls for help, the firefighters rushed to the plant with the objective of stopping the spreading of the fire to other parts of the facility.
The people living around the vicinity stated that there occurred an explosion, after which dense clouds of smoke arose from the plant premises.

One fatality was registered at the blast accident, as stated by MOL.
Nine injured individuals required hospitalization after the incident, while two workers had initially been suffering from grave injuries; nonetheless, according to the Hungarian government, both of them were not in a critical condition.
Doctors were on site all day monitoring the conditions of injured workers.
It should be noted that the identity of the deceased individual had yet to be made public.
Reaction from Government Officials
An official delegation from Hungary came to survey the area after the explosion.
The Hungarian Prime Minister, Mr. Péter Magyar, expressed condolences to the family members of the worker who died and promised that there would be an investigation into the event.
Also, government officials from the emergency management, industrial safety, and environmental protection departments arrived at the site to assess the magnitude of destruction caused by the explosion.
At first, there were no signs that the local populations were in any danger due to the incident.
MOL Reports No Evidence of Sabotage or Any Crime
According to the executive chairman of MOL Group, Zsolt Hernadi, in his statement after the incident, he referred to the event as an industrial accident, and therefore it was best not to speculate regarding its cause.
According to statements issued by MOL, preliminary investigations have shown that the cause of the explosion lies in the pipe filled with hydrocarbons attached to the Olefin 1 facility, without any evidence of sabotage, external influence, or any involvement of any criminal element.
The investigations will most likely concentrate on the processes involved during equipment restarts.
Impact of Production Review
Olefin 1 is a crucial plant in the production process at MOL because it generates roughly 370,000 metric tons of ethylene each year. This particular plant plays a major role in supplying the necessary feedstock, which contributes to the manufacture of plastics and chemicals in Central Europe.
According to the report, the other steam cracker plant situated in Tiszaújváros continued with its operations and managed to generate even when assessing damages.
There has been no information released by the company regarding when the plant will be operational again.

Air monitoring teams conducted an air quality analysis following the explosion and resulting fire at the plant.
Tests have shown that there were no levels of harmful substances detected around the perimeter of the plant area, creating any environmental hazards for the local population.
Further testing of the environment will go on as cleanup operations are ongoing at the plant site.
Inquiry Still Underway
The reason behind the explosion is still being investigated.
Experts in safety will very possibly analyze the series of events leading up to the explosion, which involve the continued efforts of restarting the plant that experienced the explosion.
Emergency response staff were present at the time, which was Friday, as they attempted to determine the cause behind the disastrous explosion.
