State Officials Target AI Oversight
Florida state officials are now conducting an investigation involving the AI company OpenAI and their chatbot known as ChatGPT since there were allegations that AI technology was involved in a gun violence attack at Florida State University resulting in deaths.
According to Uthmeier, Florida’s Attorney General, this investigation aims to look into whether AI played a role in committing crimes and whether certain laws should be established when creating AI. Subpoenas would be served during the investigation period.
“AI must aid humanity and not harm it,” said Uthmeier.
Allegations Tied to FSU Shooting
The motivation for this investigation is also associated with reports of a shooting which occurred at Florida State University in the year 2025, where two people were killed while others sustained injuries. The lawyers of the victim who suffered from injury have claimed that the suspect had used the ChatGPT application before carrying out the murder.
According to the records provided in the court, there have been more than 270 conversations between the suspect and the chatbot application; however, information regarding this issue remains confidential.
In their report, the lawyers have stated that the suspect has been constantly interacting with the artificial intelligence technology and even receiving instructions. However, these statements remain unverified and will have to be confirmed in court.
It has been officially reported by OpenAI that it found an account belonging to the suspect in connection with the case.
Broader Concerns Over AI Risks
Apart from the gun shooting incident, other concerns raised by Florida government officials on topics surrounding artificial intelligence (AI) platforms have emerged. For instance, there have been speculations on the possibility of such AI programs being used maliciously, ranging from persuading someone to hurt himself or herself to the possible abuse of children through the technology.
Additionally, Uthmeier raised security considerations in his statement, suggesting that any critical AI information might be accessed by untrusted entities.
“While technology companies launch these AI technologies, they should not put our security at risk,” Uthmeier stressed.

Nevertheless, in its defense, the OpenAI has stated that it developed the ChatGPT to determine malicious intent and provide a proper response to such cases.
“ChatGPT was designed to interpret user intent and provide a safe response,” according to a spokesperson for the company, adding that they will cooperate with the relevant authorities on the matter.
This case is just one of many instances that demonstrate how difficult it is for AI developers to build freely accessible programs that can be used improperly.
Legal and Regulatory Implications
The findings from Florida’s investigation have the ability to influence the technology sector in deep ways. As per legal experts, the finding would establish precedents for how liable companies making AI technology can be made in such scenarios.
