A Major Overhaul for One of the World’s Most Used Apps
After about ten years since their last redesign, Google Maps is getting the biggest redesign with the help of AI-based technologies. With this new design, the change in the navigation app will be a complete change from a simple navigation app to a smarter travelling companion who can help you find the answers to any question you may have, give you suggestions for things to do, and give you very realistic directions to where you want to go along the way.
The redesign includes many new AI features based on the newest version of Google Embedded in The Newest Version. Using Google’s latest product, Gemini, and features powered by AI, There are many new features added to the navigation app.
Examples of the new features would include: Navigating using the voice-activated assistant; Users will have the ability to navigate through three-dimensional routes using augmented reality; Also, there are features that provide the user with personalized recommendations for things to do along their route.
With over 2 billion individuals using Google Maps a month around the globe, Google Maps has already had a large market share and is one of the leaders, and Google’s hope in their redesign of the app will allow Google to continue to be a leader while the growth of artificial intelligence will continue to change how people utilize resources and move about cities.
“Ask Maps” Brings Conversational Navigation
As part of its redesign process, Maps is introducing a new feature called “Ask Maps,” which takes advantage of Google’s AI platform, known as Gemini.
Maps users will now be able to ask their questions using natural language rather than just typing in short keywords, like “restaurants close to me.” For instance, a user could now search for, “A cozy vegetarian restaurant with outdoor seating that’s not too far away,” or “What scenic route can I drive on that has frequent coffee shops?”
In order to generate suggestions tailored specifically for the user, the AI creates and evaluates data from millions of businesses, reviews, and mapping points.
In this new, conversational way to search for and discover locations and attractions and compare options without having to perform repeated searches, users can plan their trips.
Experts in the industry believe that the development of this feature signals a larger movement in technology towards the use of AI assistant technologies that provide context and preference information, as opposed to responding only to keyword searches.
Immersive Navigation Adds Detailed 3D Guidance
There is also a new “Immersive Navigation” experience added to improve turn-by-turn directions making it easier to follow.
With new 3D maps and visuals of structures, the terrain, intersections, and landmarks along their route, this experience aims to help reduce any confusion by allowing the user to identify visually, in a realistic environment, the right lane to be in or where to exit in areas of dense urban settings.
The new experience will be available at launch in the U.S., and will be integrated into in-car devices, such as Apple CarPlay and Android Auto.
“CoPilot” For Drivers

According to Google, the purpose of the new Map design is to make Maps a real-time travel assistant that can help with multiple tasks throughout your trip.
With Gemini’s conversational AI capabilities, drivers can ask follow-up questions while navigating with the app — like if there are any gas stations along their route, where to find an EV charging station, or which nearby restaurant has the most positive recommendations.
The AI can summarize thousands of reviews for you, recommend attractions, and suggest stops based on your personal interests.
Google describes this system as being like a helpful passenger who provides assistance to drivers, answers their questions, and helps them make decisions while driving.
Eventually, Google will implement these features into walking routes, biking routes and public transportation routes too.
Personalization and Smarter Recommendations
Personalization is an essential aspect of this new experience. The AI will customize recommendations for individual users based on their prior searches, travel behaviors, and frequent local attractions.
The application may in many instances produce a recommendation for quiet cafes to a user that has a habit of searching for coffee shops, or family-friendly things to do for a traveler looking for fun things to do in a weekend.
As well, maps can assess up to the minute real-time data, such as traffic conditions, weather, and road closures, so that they can provide proactive alerts and options for alternative routes.
Ultimately, we want to provide the ability for users to navigate with predictions rather than reactions to issues that arise.
A Strategic Move in the AI Race
Redesign is the motivation behind the competitive race by major tech companies to add generative AI to their primary offerings.
With the inclusion of Gemini-based functionality in products like Gmail, Docs and Chrome, one of the areas where Google believes mapping is a logical addition to its current ecosystem.
It is well known that there is a large amount of real-world data such as places, businesses, reviews and travel patterns available via a navigation application – creating lots of opportunities for utilizing AI to generate recommendations based on this data.
Combining this data with conversational interfaces gives Google the ability to make Maps not just a method of navigating but a comprehensive method of discovering all that is locally around you.
Competition in the Mapping Market
Many organizations are developing their solutions for mapping and navigation, while others are fighting for the right to use the data created by others. Apple Maps and Waze (both owned by Google but run separately) have both been enhancing their capabilities and services through the addition of features such as crowd-sourced traffic alerts, updated navigation interfaces, and added real-time traffic data.
The new frontier in the mapping and navigation industry is artificial intelligence, as companies strive to offer a more personalized experience with travel recommendations and smart route planning. Analysts are predicting Google will have a competitive advantage through its extensive database of location data as it rolls out additional AI features and services.
The Future of Navigation
As Google Maps has been redesigned, this also demonstrates that there are many new ways in which people interact with a digital map and how they will. In the future, instead of using digital navigation systems primarily for finding direct routes between locations, enhanced navigational systems will serve as intelligent travel assistant tools that will allow users to have access to much more than just navigation.
It is believed that many aspects of city exploration, activity planning and real-time decision-making will be addressed using intelligent travel technology and maps.
This will be achieved by using AI-powered recommendations and immersive navigation systems together to provide better travel options for individuals whether they are commuting to work, planning a vacation road trip or are travelling on vacation.
The fact that the most recent map redesign has experienced a dramatic evolution in both function and capability that has occurred only one time in the last decade as a result of AI technology, shows how the future of maps will rely on AI technology and not just geography.
