The improvements include broadband cabling upgrades, HVAC installations for data rooms, and public computer refreshes at some of HPL’s oldest facilities. Project work will begin June 4, 2026, with all work expected to be completed by December 31, 2026.

To safely complete these critical upgrades, the following locations will temporarily close for approximately one to three weeks while improvements are underway. HPL will reopen locations as soon as possible and communicate updates as schedules are finalized.

Tentative first-phase closure schedules include:

• Moody Neighborhood Library: June 4 – June 17, 2026
• Pleasantville Neighborhood Library: June 9 – June 18, 2026
• Hillendahl Neighborhood Library: June 19 – July 10, 2026
• Melcher Neighborhood Library: July 13 – July 21, 2026
• Acres Homes Neighborhood Library: July 22 – August 10, 2026

Additional improvements at Park Place, Johnson, Mancuso, Tuttle, and Walter Neighborhood Libraries will begin later in 2026.

“On behalf of Mayor Whitmire and the Houston Public Library, I thank that Texas State Library and Archives Commission for this opportunity to upgrade services for our community. These temporary closures support long-term improvements that will directly benefit customers through more reliable internet access, upgraded technology, and modernized infrastructure,” said HPL Director Sandy Gaw. “External funding and grant partnerships play an important role in helping libraries innovate and respond to changing community needs.

This project is made possible by an American Rescue Plan Act – Capital Projects Fund (ARPA-CPF) administered by the U.S. Department of the Treasury and TSLAC.  Statewide, approximately $6 million has been awarded to 37 Texas libraries through the LIFI grant program.
