Religion in Schools
A clear rule has been established that is against having religion in schools. Religion is something that should not be forced upon people, let alone children in schools. However, Louisiana has established a ruling that requires schools to have the ten commandments displayed in every school across the state.
As expected, there is a large lack of support, and a lot of very angry parents. It was declared unconstitutional by the Supreme Court more than 40 years ago, which is why this angered many people. Therefore, there have been 9 families that have filed federal lawsuits against this new Louisiana ruling.
Claims by Families Against This Ruling
Many families have argued that this is religious favoritism, and that this shows children that one religion is more superior than others. In addition, “Opponents argue that the law is a violation of separation of church and state and that the display will isolate students, especially those who are not Christian,” according to AP News.
It is clear that there is a large majority of people that are against this ruling. For several years now, the ten commandments have been a matter of controversy, which is why many states decided to stray away from incorporating a similar law. However, Louisiana decided to mandate this new law.
Hope for the Future
There is a hope that a resolution can be brought about within the near future. The majority are confident that this particular legislature can reach the Supreme Court, but others are not too sure entirely. However, it is clear that the majority is not supporting this new legislature and will do whatever they could to try and reverse it before it takes place in the beginning of 2025.
However, the outcome is still uncertain. Parents and legislators alike will work relentlessly to ensure that this law can be reversed, and to further enforce the separation of the church and state.
