Iran Nears Deal to Buy Supersonic Chinese Missiles
Iran is reportedly close to finalizing an agreement with China to purchase advanced supersonic anti-ship cruise missiles, a development that could significantly alter the strategic balance in the Middle East and pose new challenges for the United States Navy operating in the region. “Iran is close to a deal with China to purchase anti‑ship cruise missiles, according to six people with knowledge of the negotiations, just as the United States deploys a vast naval force near the Iranian coast ahead of possible strikes on the Islamic Republic,” according to The Jerusalem Post.
In accordance with the people that are familiar with what is going on, Tehran and Beijing have been discussing the acquisition of some supersonic missiles that are capable of destroying some high-tech ships that the U.S does possess. This is heightened even more after what is currently ongoing because of the tensions that are escalating between Tehran and the U.S. “Iran is close to buying a supersonic missile from China that could destroy American aircraft carriers,” according to The Telegraph.

The CM-302 missiles are designed to travel at high speeds and fly at low altitude, characteristics that make them difficult for ship-based radar and defensive systems to detect and intercept. Analysts estimate the weapons have a range of roughly 290 kilometers, enabling Iranian forces to target naval vessels operating throughout the Persian Gulf and Gulf of Oman.
Military experts warn that, if delivered, these supersonic missiles would bolster Iran’s strike capabilities against surface warships and could pose a credible threat to U.S. carrier strike groups and destroyer forces deployed in support of regional security and freedom of navigation operations.
The negotiations remain unofficially confirmed, and no delivery date or exact quantity of missiles has been publicly announced. Chinese officials have not acknowledged the sale, and Beijing’s foreign ministry has said it does not comment on arms transfer discussions.
The possible arms deal comes while the United States is maintaining a robust naval presence near Iran’s coast, including multiple carrier strike groups, aimed at deterring further escalation and protecting vital shipping routes.
