A Race Against the Clock
Israel is escalating its military offensive against Iran and has unleashed a new and intensified wave of strikes against the country with the aim of crippling the military capability of the country before a ceasefire is likely to be called. The need for this has arisen because of the growing concern that pressure from the US, and other countries, will soon lead to a ceasefire.
Israel has in the recent past altered its strategy in the war and is now focused on causing as much damage as possible to the military capability of Iran rather than achieving the objective of destroying the leadership of the country. This includes missile production centers, drone production centers, and the country’s naval capability.
“The objective now is clear—hit as much as possible while the opportunity remains,” said an official who is knowledgeable about the strategy.
Shift in Military Strategy
However, it has now been recognized that such goals are unrealistic in the short term. Now, there is a focus on long-term strategic degradation. By attacking Iran’s weapons production and supply chains, Israel is seeking to degrade Iran’s ability to rebuild its military in the aftermath of the war.
Military experts have commented that this is a pragmatic approach. “They are no longer trying to change the regime,” said one expert. “They are trying to change Iran’s military trajectory for years to come.”
This approach has meant an unprecedented level of operations, with thousands of strikes carried out in coordination with US forces in recent weeks.
Targets
The rise in the campaign also includes strikes against senior Iranian military officials. The most notable strike in recent times was the precise strike against the senior Iranian naval commander in the Revolutionary Guard. The strike was seen to be strategic and symbolic in nature.
The strikes were seen to be weakening the Iranian operations, especially in strategic areas such as the Strait of Hormuz, which is an important area in the shipping of oil.
“These strikes send a clear message. No component of Iran’s military apparatus is beyond reach,” said an Israeli defense official.
There is also an emphasis on the fact that there is still a high level of escalation, particularly considering Iranian missile capabilities.

The sense of urgency in the stepped-up strikes by Israel is directly related to the increased diplomatic efforts to end the conflict. The United States has been making efforts to find a way to end the war, with the country’s President, Donald Trump, indicating his interest in the peaceful resolution of the conflict.
This has created tension in the US-Israel alliance, with the latter feeling that if the conflict is ended through a ceasefire, some of their key military objectives would not be met.
“We cannot stop halfway,” said an Israeli official. “If the war ends too soon, Iran will recover faster than we can accept.”
The Persian Gulf States, which are allies in the region, have also expressed their concerns about the conflict, although they are supporting efforts to end the conflict. However, they want the US to ensure that there are strict limitations put in place regarding the missile and nuclear programs of Iran.
Mediation and International Concerns
Behind the scenes, there have been efforts by several countries, including Pakistan, Turkey, and Egypt, aimed at bringing about reconciliation between Washington and Tehran. This is evident in that there have been reports that some of the Iranian leaders have been removed from Israeli target lists in order to ensure that there is no interruption in talks.

This uncertainty in regard to negotiations has only served to heighten the sense of urgency on the battlefield.
Stakes

However, as the conflict enters its potentially final stages, it is still unknown what the future holds. Negotiations are still ongoing, and there are still large discrepancies between the countries and groups involved in the conflict.
For the state of Israel, the coming days are crucial in their attempts to reach their strategic objectives before outside influences intervene and impose a temporary ceasefire. For the United States and their allies, it is now a matter of balancing their military gains with the need to prevent further conflict in the area.
Whether or not this rise in strikes will be effective in creating leverage in the negotiations or will only continue to fuel further conflict is yet to be determined.
One thing is for certain, though: the decisions being made in the present moment will be felt throughout the future of the Middle East and beyond.
