Jack Harlow’s New Album Monica Has No Rapping… And That’s Exactly Why People Are Talking About It

Hip-hop fans were taken aback this week when the rapper Jack Harlow released his brand-new album titled “Monica,” only to realize something rather surprising. There is no rapping on the album whatsoever. This is a big change of pace for the artist who got his start making popular hip-hop rap hits such as “First Class” and “Whats Poppin.”

The fourth studio album by the artist is a rather big departure into the realm of singing, R&B sounds, jazz beats, and soulful melodies. This is a rather big departure from the hip-hop rap sounds that got the artist his start. This album has fans and critics everywhere weighing in on the question of whether a rapper can change his pace by abandoning the hip-hop sounds that got him where he is today.

A Surprise Release on His Birthday

Harlow released his album “Monica” on March 13, 2026. This was also the day that the Louisville-born musician turned 28 years old.

The album is relatively short compared to some of the other music that is released today. The album is only 28 minutes long and contains about nine tracks.

The majority of the album was recorded at Electric Lady Studios in New York. The studio is famous for hosting some of the most famous musicians of all time, including Jimi Hendrix and many other R&B greats. Harlow has stated that moving to New York helped him to open his mind to new sounds while making the album.

No Rapping, Just Singing

The most surprising thing about Monica is that Harlow does not rap on the album at all. Instead, he sings throughout the album. He presents a softer voice that is more reminiscent of traditional R&B than modern rap music.

The production on the album has also changed. Critics have said that the production on the album is a mix of soul, jazz, and late-night beats. This is a change from the hip-hop beats that fans might expect from Harlow.

There are a number of singers and musicians that feature on the album. Ravyn Lenae, Omar Apollo, Jermaine Paul, and Robert Glasper are just a few of them. This has also contributed to the fact that Monica is not a traditional rap album. In fact, some fans have said that Monica is an R&B album.

Why Harlow Changed His Sound

Harlow has also explained that the change was intentional. In interviews for the release of the album, he explained that he was trying to challenge himself creatively rather than sticking to the same formula that made him famous.

The rapper also explained that he was intrigued by the idea of trying a different side of his musical influences and stepping into a new kind of music that felt like home for him.

The rapper also acknowledged that people might not be expecting the change but also explained that it was part of the appeal for him to try something new rather than sticking to what was safe.

For him, the album is about trying to evolve as an artist rather than sticking to one kind of music.

Mixed Reactions From Fans and Critics

As expected, the dramatic change in style for the album has sparked mixed reactions in the music world.

While some people admire Harlow for his bold move, others see Monica as a reflection of his willingness to experiment with different styles of music, going beyond his usual hip-hop genre.

In addition, critics have argued that the change in style, which is more on the soulful side, makes one feel as if they are listening to classic R&B artists, which gives a warm feel compared to his previous flashy style of hip-hop music.

However, not everyone is on the same page as Harlow, with some critics arguing that his decision to completely leave hip-hop music may be a risk for an artist who made a name in the hip-hop world.

As observed in one of the reviews, “the project was made with the intention of abandoning rap entirely in favor of a different direction, and that split opinion among those who were expecting another hip-hop heavy effort from Harlow.”

A Career Built on Reinvention

Harlow first rose to fame in 2020 with his breakout song “Whats Poppin,” which instantly made him one of the most recognizable young rappers in the game.

Since then, he has released a number of successful albums, such as “Come Home the Kids Miss You” and “Jackman,” both of which were dominated by witty lyrics and his charming flow.

While these albums made Harlow one of the most promising young stars in hip-hop, they also made people expect his music to sound a certain way.

Monica, on the other hand, seems like Harlow is trying his best to prove that he is more than just a rapper.

What This Means for Hip-Hop

The release of the album brings to mind an interesting question regarding the scope of hip-hop artists.

In the past few years, hip-hop artists have been exploring the idea of mixing genres. This has led to rappers incorporating pop, R&B, and even rock into their music. Artists such as Drake, Post Malone, and Kid Cudi have all tried their hands at genres other than hip-hop.

The decision to make an album without rapping can be considered a continuation of this idea. However, some people think hip-hop artists should stay true to the fundamental components of the genre.

A Bold Artistic Gamble

Whether people love it or hate it, the fact remains that Monica has managed to achieve one thing: it has people talking.

In a world that sees thousands of new songs being released on a weekly basis, an album that is able to generate buzz is certainly no easy feat.

For Jack Harlow, the new album is a daring gamble that could end up redefining the very essence of the artist and help him reach a wider audience beyond the confines of the hip-hop world.

While the album may not contain the rap lyrics that helped him rise to fame in the first place, it does prove that the new release is a calculated risk on the part of the artist to create something new.

Monica may just be an album for Jack Harlow, but it could also be the start of a brand new chapter in the life of the American rapper.
