Kristi Noem Fired
Trump fires Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem, and Democrats are calling it a long-overdue win. “Department of Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem is leaving the department and he will nominate Sen. Markwayne Mullin (R-Okla.) as her replacement, President Trump said Thursday,” according to Axios News.
He has officially shown Kristi Noem the door at the Department of Homeland Security. It’s the first big cabinet firing of his second term, and it’s sending shockwaves through Washington today.
Trump announced on Thursday that Noem is out, and Oklahoma Senator Markwayne Mullin is in—or at least he will be, once the Senate gives him the green light. While he gets ready to take over the massive department that handles everything from the border to disaster relief, Noem isn’t completely leaving the administration. She’s moving into a new diplomatic role as the “Special Envoy for the Shield of the Americas,” which sounds like a fancy way of saying she’ll be working on security deals across the Western Hemisphere.
A Storm of Controversy and Criticism
This move didn’t come out of nowhere. Noem has been in the hot seat for months, with critics on both sides of the aisle questioning how she was running the show at DHS.
The breaking point for many was a tragic incident in Minneapolis where federal agents shot and killed two American citizens during an immigration operation. People were already furious, but things got even worse when Noem went on the record calling the victims “domestic terrorists.” When video evidence came out that seemed to tell a completely different story, the backlash was instant.
It wasn’t just that one event, either. House Democrats had already started the paperwork to impeach her, accusing her of misusing her power and blocking anyone from checking up on what her department was doing. Then there was the issue of money—lawmakers were drilling her about a multi-million dollar ad campaign that seemed more about self-promotion than actual policy.
Tense Days on Capitol Hill
It’s been a rough week for Noem in Washington. She was grilled in front of Congress about immigration raids, the way her agents were handling high-profile cases, and whether she was more focused on getting on TV than doing the actual work. “n a post on Truth Social, the president said that Noem had “served us well, and has had numerous and spectacular results”, before noting that she would become the special envoy for the “Shield of the Americas” – a new “security initiative” that he plans to announce this week in Doral, Florida with Latin American leaders,” according to The Guardian.
The most telling part of those hearings? It wasn’t just the Democrats who were coming after her. Some Republicans started asking tough questions, too. It was clear her support within her own party was falling apart, and that likely made the President’s decision a lot easier.

Democrats Aren’t Hiding Their Relief
To no one’s surprise, Democrats are celebrating her exit.
Many lawmakers are saying this was long overdue and that the department has been a mess under her watch. Some are calling it a “win for accountability,” while others are hoping this is a sign that the department might finally start moving in a different direction.
Trump Isn’t Changing Course on Policy
Even though Noem is gone, the White House is making it very clear that the President’s immigration plans aren’t changing one bit. Trump has built his second term around a “get tough” approach at the border, and that’s not going anywhere.
By picking Markwayne Mullin—one of his most loyal and vocal defenders—Trump is signaling that he wants someone who will fight for his agenda without hesitation. Mullin doesn’t have a ton of experience in national security, but he’s known for being a fighter who isn’t afraid to go toe-to-toe with the President’s critics.
A Short, Rocky Run
Noem’s time at the top of DHS was anything but quiet. Since she took the job in early 2025, she’s been the face of the administration’s toughest border policies.
You’d often see her at the border or during immigration raids, firmly defending the idea that more deportations and detentions were the only way forward. While her fans loved her for being “forceful,” her critics argued she was more interested in the cameras than in finding real, lasting solutions to the immigration problem.
What’s Next?
Now, everyone is looking at what Mullin will do with a department that employs over 250,000 people. It’s a massive, complicated beast of an agency, and how he manages it will be a huge test.
For Trump, this firing is a defining moment for his second term, showing he’s willing to swap out big names if they become a political liability. For Democrats, it feels like proof that their months of pressure finally paid off.
Whether this actually changes how the U.S. handles its borders or just swaps one controversial leader for another is something we’ll all find out in the months to come.
