One Year and Still No Trial
Chicago rapper Lil Durk will continue to wait even longer for his court date to start. A judge in Los Angeles has just moved the court date to late summer. Lil Durk and his lawyers stated they were prepared to stand trial. This legal battle has already been going on for over a year.
The government claims that the rapper planned an attack against a rival rapper named Quando Rondo. Prosecutors stated the situation led to a 2022 shooting in L.A. that killed the rapper’s friend. Lil Durk states he is innocent and had nothing to do with the incident.
These constant court delays are upsetting for the rappers legal team. The hip-hop world is awaiting the trial since this is one of the biggest criminal cases that involves a famous rapper.
Another Delay in a Long Legal Process
Since Lil Durk’s arrest in October 2024, his court date has been pushed back once again. The rappers court date was supposed to start in early 2025 but because it is such a big case and it involves so many people the date keeps getting pushed back.
Judge Michael Fitzgerald has moved the start date to August 2026. This gives the lawyers for the other people in the case more time to get ready.
The rapper clearly did not want another delay. His lawyer Drew Findling told the court they were ready and expressed his concerns about the delays. The judge decided that everyone involved needs more time to make sure the court hearing is fair.
Co-Defendants Requested More Time
A big reason for the delay is that the rapper isn’t the only one on trial. Several other people were charged and their lawyers asked the court for more time to look over the evidence.
This case is a major criminal case with over hundreds of digital files, including security camera footage, recordings, and thousands of pages of police reports. In a massive case like this, it can take a long time for every lawyer to read through everything and build a plan.
Lil Durk’s legal team actually asked the judge to let him have his own separate court case so he could get it over with sooner. However, the judge said no, that everyone has to be tried together. The rapper is stuck waiting until every single person in the case is ready.
The Allegations Against Durk
The government states the rapper helped organize a murder for hire in order to kill his rival Quando Rondo. They claim that members of Durk’s rap group Only the Family carried out a shooting to get revenge for the 2020 death of Lil Durk’s close friend King Von.
King Von was killed outside a club in Atlanta during a fight with one of Rondo’s crew members. That event made the drill rap scene very dangerous and started a long feud between the two groups.
Prosecutors state this was a eye for an eye situation. The rappers alleged revenge led to the 2022 shooting in Los Angeles where Rondo’s friend was killed. Although Rondo himself wasn’t hurt but Lil Durk is now facing serious federal charges. If the rapper is found guilty he could spend the rest of his life in prison.

Rap Lyrics as Evidence
One of the most controversial parts of this case is that the government wants to use Lil Durk’s lyrics as evidence. The Judge Fitzgerald ruled that prosecutors can now show certain lyrics in court. The judge believes the lyrics refer to the actual murder for hire.
Critics state this is unfair while arguing that rap is just art and that song lyrics shouldn’t be used to prove someone is a criminal. Many activists and even lawmakers are fighting against this stating its unfair. They also state this targets hip-hop artists and can lead to racial bias. Other states are starting to ban the use of lyrics in court but federal trials like this one is still allowed.
What Happens Next
Since the court date is now set for August, Lil Durk will stay in jail while his lawyers get ready for a difficult court battle. Legal experts state that once the court date actually starts it could last for weeks or even months. Fans and the music world are stuck waiting for answers to one of the biggest criminal rap cases ever.
For the rapper and his supporters, the delay is a frustrating setback in a court case that has lasted for over a year. When the the court finally starts, it will be a major moment in the music industry. This won’t just decide Lil Durk’s fate but it will also be a major test on how the legal system treats the music industry.
This case highlights the drill rap scene and what comes along with it. People are worried that the outcome will change and how rappers are allowed to express themselves. They question whether their lyrics will always be used against them in the court of law.
