JERSEY CITY — Malcolm‑Jamal Warner, the Emmy‑nominated actor who became a television icon as Theo Huxtable on The Cosby Show, died July 20, 2025, at age 54, while on a family vacation in Limón, Costa Rica, authorities said. Warner was swimming at Playa Cocles when a powerful current pulled him from shore. Despite rescue efforts, he was pronounced dead at the scene.
Born Aug. 18, 1970, in Jersey City to Pamela and Robert Warner Jr., Warner went on to build a multi‑faceted career as an actor, musician and poet. He earned early acclaim for his portrayal of the only son in a family of five on The Cosby Show, earning an Emmy nomination for outstanding supporting actor in 1986.
Warner did not limit himself to acting. He directed episodes of The Cosby Show, Kenan & Kel, Malcolm & Eddie and served behind the camera in music videos—including New Edition’s “N.E. Heart Break.” A Grammy winner and spoken‑word poet, he continued to tour and record, most recently performing with the Robert Glasper Experiment.
Costa Rican authorities confirmed the accidental death was due to asphyxia by submersion. Reports note no lifeguards were present, and another man involved in the incident remained critically injured.
Warner is survived by his wife and their young daughter. He kept his family life private, but in a May 2025 podcast, he spoke lovingly of his partner and called his daughter “the beautiful manifestation of our love.”
Tributes poured in from the entertainment community. Regina King, Warner’s former partner, wrote: “Ride in Power.” Bill Cosby, who played his TV father, called Warner “like a real son” and compared the loss to losing his own child. Kelly Ripa paused live taping to honor the man she first welcomed on Live! in 1988.
A statement from Warner in May revealed how he wanted to be remembered: not just as the boy on television, but as someone who kept “one’s soul amid the darkness in the world.” His father later said he was proudest of his character, even more than his career accomplishments.
