Man Accused of Plot to Assassinate Trump Testifies

A man accused of Trump assassination attempt told a federal jury that he was pressured by Iranian operatives to carry out the scheme, claiming he feared for his family’s safety if he refused. “Asif Merchant, who is on trial on terrorism and murder-for-hire charges in Federal District Court in Brooklyn, said that he had been forced to go along with the plot to protect his family in Tehran from the Revolutionary Guards Corps,” according to The New York Times.

The man, identified in court as Asif Raza Merchant, testified this week in federal court in Brooklyn, New York, as part of a high-profile trial centered on an alleged murder-for-hire plot targeting prominent American political figures. Merchant, 47, has pleaded not guilty to terrorism-related charges connected to the alleged assassination scheme.

During testimony, Merchant said that a contact tied to Iran’s powerful paramilitary force, the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps, pressured him into organizing the plot. According to Merchant, the contact warned that harm could come to his relatives living in Iran if he failed to cooperate.

Merchant testified through an interpreter that his family was under threat and that he felt compelled to do this, describing what he characterized as intense pressure from Iranian intelligence handlers.

Alleged Targets Included Trump, Biden and Haley

Prosecutors say the alleged plan involved recruiting individuals in the United States to assassinate political leaders, with Trump believed to be the primary target.

However, Merchant told jurors that the Iranian contact mentioned several possible targets during discussions, including then-President Joe Biden and former U.S. ambassador and presidential candidate Nikki Haley. “”You traveled to the United States for the purpose of hiring Mafia members to kill a politician, correct?” Assistant U.S. Attorney Nina Gupta asked during her turn questioning Merchant Wednesday in a Brooklyn federal court,” according to CBS News.

Merchant testified that the operative did not initially specify exactly who should be killed but eventually referenced the three political figures during conversations about potential operations.

According to court filings and testimony, the alleged instructions came after Merchant had already been assisting Iranian operatives with other activities such as moving money and evading sanctions.

FBI Sting Operation

Federal prosecutors say Merchant attempted to recruit criminals in the United States to carry out the killings.

Instead, the individuals he approached turned out to be undercover law enforcement officers working with the FBI. Merchant allegedly met with them and offered about $5,000 in cash as an initial payment for the planned assassination.

Investigators said Merchant even sketched out aspects of the proposed attack during meetings with the undercover agents, believing they were professional hitmen. Those conversations were secretly recorded and later became key evidence in the case.

Authorities arrested Merchant in July 2024 while he was attempting to leave the United States.

Prosecutors say the recordings and other evidence demonstrate that he was actively trying to organize a killing on behalf of Iranian interests.

Defense Claims Coercion

Merchant’s defense centers on his claim that he was coerced into participating in the plot.

During testimony, he told the jury he feared for the safety of family members living in Iran after the alleged handler indicated that he knew where they lived.

Merchant said he believed that cooperating with U.S. authorities might ultimately protect him and possibly help him remain in the United States.

He also testified that he suspected he might eventually be arrested and claimed he did not expect any assassination to actually occur.

Prosecutors strongly dispute this version of events, arguing that the evidence shows he willingly worked to arrange a murder-for-hire scheme.

Iran Denies Involvement

The alleged plot comes amid years of tensions between the United States and Iran.

U.S. officials have long warned that Iranian intelligence services have sought revenge against American officials involved in the 2020 killing of Iranian commander Qasem Soleimani, who was killed in a U.S. drone strike ordered by Trump.

That strike triggered a wave of threats from Iranian leaders and led U.S. authorities to investigate several alleged assassination plots against current and former American officials.

However, the Iranian government has repeatedly denied involvement in plans to assassinate U.S. politicians.

Trial Unfolds Amid Heightened Tensions

The case has attracted significant attention because of the high-profile political figures allegedly discussed as targets.

Security concerns around political leaders have remained high in recent years following multiple assassination attempts and threats against public officials.

Legal experts say the trial could hinge on whether jurors believe Merchant acted voluntarily or was genuinely coerced by foreign intelligence operatives.

If convicted on the most serious charges, Merchant could face life in prison.

What Comes Next

The trial is expected to continue with further cross-examination and testimony from investigators involved in the case.

Merchant’s defense team, meanwhile, is expected to continue emphasizing the alleged threats against his family and portraying him as a reluctant participant caught in the middle of an international intelligence operation.
