Rubio Terminates Green Cards of Foreign Nationals
The American secretary of state, Marco Rubio, has withdrawn the green card status from those foreigners considered associates of one of the significant officials in the Iranian regime. This is a move by the Trump administration as part of its campaign strategy to strip the citizenship of immigrants associated with Iranian political and security institutions.
This is due to the fact that such individuals are viewed as friends and associates of Masoumeh Ebtekar, a well-known politician in Iran and a former vice president, whose fame in America is because of her role in the hostage situation involving Iranians and the taking of hostages at the American embassy in Tehran, where 52 Americans were held hostage for 444 days in 1979.
Revocations and Detentions
According to the State Department, the affected parties include the family members of Ebtekar, such as her son, who had stayed legally in the country based on a green card which was granted to them many years ago.
It seems that their green cards were canceled because they were somehow related to the Iranian government. Due to losing their legal status, they had been arrested by the officials of ICE, and now there are some orders for their deportation.
Government Justification
This measure was taken as one of the steps meant to ensure that individuals with connections with nations opposed to the United States do not enter into the American territories. The Department of State of the United States, through statements that accompanied this measure, made it known that the United States will not be used as a ‘safe haven’ by individuals with links with nations that oppose the US.
The new policy of the administration is targeted at evaluating those Iranians who have ties with Iran’s political leadership and/or the Revolutionary Guards.
Part of a Broader Enforcement Pattern
This comes on the heels of a number of immigration-related enforcement activities conducted against Iranians residing in the United States, whereby green cards have been revoked, arrests made, and deportations conducted as a result of alleged associations with the military and political regimes of Iran.
This is characterized by intensified scrutiny of residence status granted by past administrations through visa and lottery processes.
Ongoing Political and Legal Debate
The decision has once more brought up the issue of the existence of balance between the application of national security laws and due process. In relation to deportation, it was seen that green cards could actually be stripped off. But it also needs to be mentioned that revocation of the green card can be contested in immigration court.
Outlook
Given that there is still tension going on between the two countries, it is for sure that there are more events regarding immigration to come. Meanwhile, this event can be considered an example of the increasing confidence displayed by US officials toward those with connections to the Iranian regime.
