Bringing Back Comedy
It’s been over 20 years and Marlon Wayans is finally bring back Scary Movie 6 and he states he has a bigger goal than just make people laugh. For Marlon Wayans this movie is about making a statement.
Marlon Wayans recently stated that his main mission is to cancel the cancel culture and bring back real comedy to theaters. This movie has stirred up controversy before its release. It means the new movie won’t just make fun of scary films but it will also poke fun at how sensitive people have become and how movie studios are now afraid to take risks.
A Franchise That Changed Comedy
When the original Scary Movie hit theaters in 2000, it became an instant classic. Directed by Keenen Ivory Wayans and co-written by Marlon and Shawn Wayans the film made fun of films from the late 90s. Horror films like Scream and I Know What You Did Last Summer.
The film was produced with a simple budget. Scary Movie went on to gain more than $275 million worldwide. The success of the film was so big it grew into a multi film franchise. The film made Wayans family a comedic powerhouse.
The Wayans brothers only started and directed two more films until their departure from the franchise in 2001. The Wayans brothers’ abrupt departure was due to creative and financial disputes.
Comedy Shouldn’t Be Afraid
Marlon Wayans has always been open about controversial topics. In his 2018 Netflix special Woke-ish, he joked about race and how society is changing. The comedian feels that comedy is being policed.
Wayans says there is a lot of fear in the entertainment industry. According to the comedian, the movie studios and comedians are now terrified of saying the wrong thing. Marlon Wayans states that comedy should be fearless all while pushing buttons.
Some critics say that the cancel culture is ruining comedy, while others think it’s just about being more responsible. The comedian plans to fix the cancel culture with Scary Movie 6. The comedian won’t be playing it safe and he will use satire jokes about today’s sensitive topics. He states that his goal isn’t to hurt feelings but to laugh at how ridiculous the world has become.
A New Horror Landscape
Before the first movie came out, horror films were all about masked killers. Today’s horror movies have changed, as they’re more about psychological head games and social issues.
The comedian is able to see today’s society issues as an opportunity to work with because horror films have become so artsy and political. Insiders state that this movie will make fun of these new trends and movies that are too serious or have boring endings. The comedic film will also take shots at famous internet moments and societal culture.

The full cast hasn’t been publicly revealed but Marlon Wayans wants to work with his family and old creative partners. The Wayans family is also including their siblings Damon and Kim. His siblings are also famous for making jokes that push the limits. The comedian stated their whole career was built on taking big risks.
Experts state that bringing back old famous movies with the original creators usually works well. However some critics warn that what was funny 20 years ago might not work in today’s sensitive society. One studio executive stated that it will be difficult to be edgy without being mean. He states that he isn’t worried. He also believes someone can grow and change without losing their sense of humor.
The Broader Comedy Conversation
Scary Movie 6 has come at the right time. Many famous comedians have said to have felt trapped by how audiences react to jokes. Newer comedians are focusing more on being kind and self aware in today’s society.
He doesn’t think its ok to have to choose one or the other. He states comedy is always changing, pointing out that legends like Richard Pryor and Eddie Murphy have changed over time but have never stopped being bold.
He believes people can tell if a joke is meant to be smart or if it’s just meant to be mean. He states if your heart is in the right place the joke will always work. If the joke doesn’t someone will learn from it and move on.
A Risk and a Promise
Bringing back a movie franchise after 10 years is a major risk. People today are really sensitive and one wrong joke can start a huge controversy online. Marlon Wayans as he stated isn’t worried. He states that they aren’t trying to be mean and they just want to have fun because the world is so stressed right now.
No one is sure if Scary Movie 6 will actually cancel the cancel culture but it’s clear that Marlon Wayans is being just as bold as he was when the first scary movie was released. If Marlon Wayans is correct then audiences will be dying of laughter once again.
