Mayor Whitmire to Kick-Off Demolitions Days

Mayor John Whitmire will kick off the City of Houston’s “Demolition Days,” an initiative focused on demolishing dangerous and blighted structures that attract illegal dumping. The targeted properties include structures located in flood plains and areas that impede effective drainage. Crews will demolish eight properties on Friday, May 15, and Saturday, May 16, 2026.

Earlier this year, City Council approved allocating $30 million from the City’s Stormwater Fund for the initiative. Friday’s demolition marks the first of several “Demolition Days” planned across the city.
