According to Milly Alcock, she was doing dishes in a Sydney restaurant before getting her part as Supergirl within the DC cinematic universe that continues to grow.
As soon as Alcock joins the ranks of people who played Supergirl on film, a part which will surely create headlines across the globe, some of her fans have decided that it is now time to make the story of her beginnings become widely known. What could be wrong with that?
Alcock’s background stands out among those of other people who succeeded thanks to their acting careers because she was one of the few people who did not experience overnight success. At least, before succeeding as an actress, she was “proudly washing dishes”.
This quote by Alcock went viral very fast due to the fact that, as opposed to typical stories about Hollywood’s success, she tells about her hard work and struggle on the way to the top.
Looks like this may serve her well in the future.

Before becoming an established name across the globe by starring in the TV show House of the Dragon, taking on the role of a young Rhaenyra Targaryen, she had been going through the trials that most actors experience on their way to fame:

The mention of being a dishwasher in a Sydney hotel caught the attention of viewers because it contradicts completely the image that actors usually portray.
In no time, the reaction turned into discussions that were not about the Hollywood superstar but about how all actors who have made it big have had a number of ordinary jobs behind them in pursuit of their passion.

That’s exactly what made this story extremely popular on the internet – in the era when most celebrities like to portray themselves as perfectly crafted right from the start of their careers.
Indeed, internet consumers have formed a certain penchant for celebrities that are still grounded in real-life situations, and such people consist mainly of young artists discussing financial problems, other job opportunities, and difficulties before success.
Alcock is a great example of such an artist.
Why Milly Alcock’s Casting Is Already Important For DC Fans
The casting of Milly Alcock as Supergirl is very important for DC movies because of where DC currently is in its reboot process.
Having had a period of bad movies and a need to reshape the universe, DC movies have made their audience very sensitive to any casting choices.
Supergirl is particularly interesting because of having to compete against her brother, Superman, and having to differentiate herself as the star of future DC films.
To do so, she will not only have to be able to act but will also need to bring more emotion and authenticity as she makes the big story smaller.
Ironically, the story of a dishwasher who ends up starring in a DC movie might actually work in that regard.

That is one of the reasons why the story of her career becomes very interesting because her success was certainly not immediate for Alcock.
Before she appeared in “House of the Dragon,” she had been acting in an Australian series for some years until finally the success of this show made her famous across the world.
The point here is important to note because careers within the entertainment industry might look like instant successes for people outside.
However, the truth is that in many instances, the performers work hard for many years before achieving success with one particular show.
In this case, it is “House of the Dragon.” As Supergirl, Alcock shoots up to become a blockbuster movie star.
More Than a Superhero Casting for Fans
What I find fascinating in this specific reaction of fans towards the casting of Alcock is the idea that people have begun thinking and discussing a whole lot more than her casting for Supergirl alone.
People seem to relate to Alcock as a celebrity who has managed to maintain her down-to-earth personality throughout even when cast in a superhero movie role.
The celebrity that today’s entertainment world admires is someone who is:
- conscious
- down-to-earth
- openly proud of his/her humble origins
- and not linked to the polished influencer stereotype that dominates social media
It is clear that Alcock expressed herself in a very relatable way.
Furthermore, there is a universal appeal to working hard at your survival job while dreaming of something better. Survival jobs are relevant regardless of whether it is acting, music, writing, or business.
Emotional Bond Required for DC’s Future Phase
With DC Studios embarking on a new phase, emotional connection may become as important as visual fireworks.
The days when casting information of the franchise used to elicit similar reactions from the audience are long gone, as exhaustion made fans see through the spectacle and pay attention to the performers they can relate to emotionally.
Alcock may already be accomplishing this, even before she begins shooting her own standalone movie.
Whereas most new actresses joining a franchise get branded as “the next Supergirl,” she appears as someone who knows about the world outside the spotlight very well.
When marketing seems to take precedence over movies, it may give her an edge.
