Netflix to Pay $600 Million for an AI Firm
One of the biggest technology deals that the streaming giant is making in recent years is the acquisition of an artificial intelligence startup founded by actor Ben Affleck for a deal worth up to $600 million. “Netflix Inc. will pay as much as $600 million for InterPositive, the AI moviemaking company founded by Ben Affleck, according to people familiar with the matter, making the purchase one of the biggest ever by the streaming leader,” according to Yahoo! Finance.
The artificial intelligence startup is named InterPositive and has been operating under the radar since it was founded in 2022. The startup has been building artificial intelligence tools that are meant for filmmaking.
The acquisition is a part of a larger shift in the filmmaking industry. The shift is towards the increased adoption of artificial intelligence for filmmaking. However, unlike most artificial intelligence tools that are meant for filmmaking or creating content from scratch, the artificial intelligence tools created by the startup are for something entirely different—improving the post-production process.
The following is what Netflix is actually acquiring, and why the company thinks that the technology can be a game-changer for filmmaking.
The Startup Behind the Deal
InterPositive was founded by Affleck, along with a small team of engineers and filmmakers, with the aim of designing AI tools for the Hollywood industry. The company developed a special tool that can aid editors, VFX teams, as well as directors, with the manipulation of the footage after the filming process is over.
Unlike many other AI tools that use text prompts for the generation of content, the InterPositive tool uses the actual footage from a movie or a television series. This allows the tool to understand the lighting, lens, as well as the style, of the content before any adjustments are made.
This allows human creators to maintain control over the final product, while at the same time minimizing the cost of editing as well as the time involved.
AI Tools for Post-Production
The technology developed by InterPositive is centered on the post-production phase of film making. This is the phase where the actual production of the film takes place.
The AI technology developed by InterPositive can be used to perform a number of functions. This includes:
- The relighting of scenes to make them more visible
- The removal of unwanted objects from the scenes
- The improvement or replacement of the backgrounds of some scenes
- The correction of errors in the scenes
- The reframing of the scenes to make them more visible
The technology developed by InterPositive can be very useful to filmmakers. This is especially true given the fact that some of the functions can be performed in a matter of days. This is significant considering the fact that some studios spend millions of dollars on a daily basis during the production phase. ” said he began working in secret in 2022 with a small team of engineers to develop a suite of AI tools that could help filmmakers better refine their work,” according to MarketWatch.

Why Netflix Wants the Technology
For the case of Netflix, the acquisition is about more than just experimenting with AI. This is because the streaming giant is known to produce hundreds of films and shows each year. Therefore, efficiency in the production of these shows is a priority for the company.
By integrating InterPositive’s tools directly into its production pipeline, the streaming giant hopes to:
- Cut the costs of movie and show productions
- Reduce the time taken to produce these shows
- Enhance the quality of the shows without the need to redo scenes
- Offer creators new possibilities for their shows
Other experts argue that the acquisition is a way for the streaming giant to control the future of AI-assisted filmmaking rather than relying on third-party vendors.
Rather than relying on third-party vendors for the tools, the streaming giant will be able to create its own AI tools tailored to its productions.
The Deal Structure
While the deal has been said to be valued at a maximum of $600 million, the actual figure could vary depending on the performance milestones set for the deal.
The initial payment is said to be less than that figure, and the subsequent payments depend upon the technology being successfully integrated into the production process at Netflix and being successfully utilized by filmmakers.
The entire team at InterPositive is said to be joining Netflix as a result of this deal. Affleck is also expected to be a part of the company in a senior advisory role for technology and filmmaking.
The deal for Netflix could prove to be one of the biggest acquisitions for the company.
A New AI Arms Race in Hollywood
Netflix’s decision also underscores the increasing competition between entertainment companies to use artificial intelligence technology.
The big studios and the entertainment companies are investing heavily in artificial intelligence technology to assist in editing, visual effects, dubbing, and localization. Companies such as Amazon and Disney are exploring the same technology to help reduce costs.
The trend, however, has raised controversy among the filmmakers in Hollywood. There are concerns that the studios might use the technology to replace some of the staff.
Ben Affleck has been quoted to stress the importance of the technology being used to enhance the creative process.
Why an Actor Built an AI Company
The involvement of Affleck in this startup was a surprise to many when this deal was announced.
According to Affleck, “The idea was born out of several years of working on sets, seeing how time-consuming and costly post-production is.” The aim was to create AI technology that would be of value to filmmakers by creating AI that would “speak” their language.
The company developed its own data set that was based on real-world filmmaking environments, allowing its AI technology to “mimic” filmmaking scenarios.
A Strategic Shift for Netflix
The purchase of InterPositive also indicates a shift in strategy for Netflix.
Rather than spending billions on acquiring traditional media companies or studios, Netflix is now spending on technology that helps improve the creation of media content.
By acquiring AI technology that helps speed up filmmaking, Netflix could potentially create a competitive edge for itself in the coming years by creating more media content quickly and at a lower cost than others.
The $600 million deal for InterPositive could potentially be a worthwhile deal if the technology works well, rather than just being a deal for a startup company.
