New Medicaid Rules
The recently established federal rules concerning eligibility requirements for the Medicaid program will require that some of the able-bodied persons enrolled in the program have to spend a minimum of one month in work activities in order to retain their eligibility.
As per the recent federal rules regarding eligibility requirements for Medicaid program, all eligible persons must present evidence of one month participation in one of the work activities recognized by the federal rules.
States Add Stricter Requirements
While the federal standard requires one month, certain states have taken up the issue by putting in place stricter standards. Certain state programs have increased their requirement of an individual working continually for three months.
As advocates of such stricter standards claim, longer work requirements are essential in maintaining involvement in the workforce and reducing dependence on government-sponsored programs. Besides, longer work requirements can help provide job training.
On the contrary, those who oppose such requirements claim that the addition of more requirements would make poor families stay away from government-sponsored assistance programs as they go through continuous changes in their employment.
Debate Over Access and Accountability
This new policy has once again thrown the previous debate on the role that the work requirement will play in the country’s assistance programs into limelight. The supporters of the policy argue that through making the eligibility of Medicaid dependent upon work, it will help build self-reliance and ensure that only those who need help really search for employment opportunities.
Health care experts and policy analysts among others have criticized the new policy on the basis that the reporting requirement attached to Medicaid eligibility will end up denying many eligible individuals this assistance simply because of the procedure involved.
Potential Impact on Enrollees
According to the initial estimates, the new regulations would impact millions of people who are covered by Medicaid across the United States, including people in expansion states who benefited from the new criteria earlier. It is important to note that everything would depend on how strictly state governments will apply the new regulations or how flexible they will be concerning exceptions.
Hospitals and physicians also believe that the increased paperwork will create problems and interfere with the provision of healthcare to some patients, including patients suffering from chronic conditions.
Next Steps and Legal Challenges
As soon as the process of implementation begins, several states begin preparing informational brochures for people who have been covered by insurance, while at the same time, several other organizations are going to take some of the features into court, as they violate the basic idea behind the Medicaid program.
In other words, the changes introduced can be considered as a completely new approach that contradicts the existing one and redefines the relationship between work and health care.
