NYPD Arrested Individual After Snowball Fight

In a scene that began as play in the snow and ended in controversy, NYPD police have arrested a 27‑year‑old man in connection with a snowball fight in Washington Square Park that left officers injured earlier this week. “One of the hooligans who allegedly pelted NYPD cops with snowballs in a rowdy free-for-all at Washington Square Park has been unmasked — as a 27-year-old punk who was arrested for attempted robbery just weeks ago, police said,” according to The New York Post.

The New York Police Department (NYPD) announced Thursday that Gusmane Coulibaly, 27, was taken into custody and charged with allegedly assaulting police officers during the Monday snowball gathering. The arrest came after video footage of the event circulated online, showing officers being struck by snow and ice as they attempted to navigate through a disorderly crowd.

Police were responding to a 911 call about a large, boisterous group when they found themselves at the center of the snowball chaos. Multiple officers were reportedly hit in the face with packed snow and ice, and two officers were treated at a nearby hospital for injuries to the face, head and neck, according to NYPD statements. The department described the conduct as more than just innocent fun, framing it instead as an attack on law enforcement personnel.

Coulibaly’s arrest marked the first in the case, but officials say they are still seeking three other individuals captured in images released by the department. “The arrest comes after Mayor Zohran Mamdani suggested participants should not face criminal charges and called the episode a snowball fight that got “out of hand,” according to The Gothamist.

The incident has sparked a political and public debate about how to view large snowball fights and what constitutes criminal behavior in such settings. Mayor Zohran Mamdani acknowledged the event but described it as a “snowball fight that got out of hand,” suggesting that the situation may not have required criminal charges. His comments have drawn criticism from police unions and some city leaders, who argue that downplaying the assault undermines respect for law enforcement.

The arrest of Coulibaly, who police say had a prior arrest for attempted robbery, has been highlighted by supporters of a tougher response as evidence that serious misconduct occurred.

As investigators continue to search for other suspects, the episode stands as a rare example of how a simple winter tradition, a snowball fight, can lead to legal trouble and widespread debate about public safety, policing, and community interactions in New York City.
