Five People in the Hospital After Explosion

Officials in New Jersey are working hard to figure out exactly what caused a massive explosion that tore through an apartment building, leaving five people injured and a neighborhood in shock.

The blast happened on Wednesday evening in Paterson, turning a quiet neighborhood into a scene of chaos. Emergency responders rushed to the area, and people living nearby had to leave their homes in a hurry while crews searched the wreckage and checked to see if the surrounding buildings were still safe to stand in.

Explosion Rocks a Quiet Neighborhood

It was just after 6 p.m.—a time when many families were likely settling in for dinner—when the explosion ripped through the building in a busy part of the city. People living blocks away said they felt their own windows shake from a “boom” so loud it sounded like something out of a movie.

Within minutes, the air was thick with smoke and dust.

Firefighters and police officers were on the scene almost immediately. When they got to the building, they found a heartbreaking sight: windows blown out, debris scattered everywhere, and interior walls that had simply crumbled from the force of the blast.

In the middle of all that mess, several people who had been inside when it happened were badly hurt.

Five People Rushed to the Hospital

Five people ended up being taken to nearby hospitals. They’re dealing with a lot right now—painful burns, cuts from flying glass, and the effects of breathing in all that thick smoke.

The good news is that none of the injuries seem to be life-threatening at this point, but several of the victims are still under the care of doctors to make sure they’re going to be okay.

Paramedics also helped a few other residents right there on the sidewalk, though those folks chose not to go to the hospital. For now, the names of the people hurt haven’t been shared as their families are being notified.

Families Forced Out as Safety Concerns Grow

Right after the blast, everyone in the damaged building and the houses right next door had to get out fast.

Engineers and investigators spent the night looking at the walls and floors, trying to decide if the building is even stable anymore. In the meantime, the people who live there are displaced, left wondering when—or if—they’ll be able to go back home.

The damage inside is extensive, and there’s a real worry that parts of the structure could still collapse. To keep things safe, the gas and power were shut off for the whole block while the team worked.

Searching for the “Why”

Right now, everyone wants to know one thing: why did this happen?

State fire marshals and local prosecutors are on the case, combing through the debris for clues. They’re looking at everything—a potential gas leak, a piece of equipment that failed, or maybe a hidden structural issue.

While they’ve said there’s no reason to think someone did this on purpose, they’re still in the very early stages of the investigation. They are being incredibly careful, checking every gas line and appliance to see if something small triggered such a big disaster.

Neighbors Describe the Terrifying Scene

For the people who live on that street, it was a terrifying night.

Some neighbors said the sound was so intense they thought a car had crashed into their house or that a massive transformer had blown. Others stepped outside to see a cloud of smoke rising over the rooftops.

In the moments after, the community really stepped up. People were out in the street, checking on their neighbors and making sure their families were safe while the sirens got closer.

Some of those neighbors still haven’t been able to go back inside because of the safety perimeter the police set up.

Waiting on Safety Checks

City inspectors are going to be at the building for at least a few more days. They have to decide if the place can be fixed or if the damage is so bad that it will have to be torn down.

It’s a tough situation for the residents, and the city is working with property managers to help them find a place to stay and get the help they need.

A Reminder of the Risks

While we don’t see things like this happen every day, it’s a scary reminder of what can happen when a gas leak goes unnoticed.

Safety experts are using this as a moment to remind everyone: if you ever smell gas, don’t wait—get out and report it immediately. Keeping your heaters and stoves in good shape can truly save lives.

The Investigation Goes on

For now, the neighborhood is just trying to process what happened.

Finding the real cause could take weeks. Specialists need to analyze everything they found at the scene to be 100% sure.

The authorities are asking anyone who saw or heard something that might help to reach out. As the work continues, the people of Paterson are left waiting for answers and hoping their neighbors in the hospital make a full recovery.
