Consequently, there has been backlash against energy companies due to the large profits being made at a time when millions are experiencing difficulties with rising living costs as a result of the crisis. An increase in gasoline prices in particular in the US has further put pressure on businesses and families amidst the general cost of living increase that is happening.
“It’s disturbing that such huge profits can be made despite people struggling with their energy costs,” an advocacy group representative said. The debate about imposing a special tax on oil companies is once again being raised.
On the other hand, BP responded to its positive financials by highlighting how the company contributes to supplying energy amid disruptions. In addition, the energy firm highlighted how it continues investing in different types of energy sources.
However, experts predict that the situation will not change in the coming months since the conflict in Ukraine remains unresolved, thus making energy prices to remain relatively high and resulting in profits for major oil companies.
