Oscars 2026: Winners, Losers, and the Viral Drama Everyone Is Talking About

The 98th Academy Awards, which took place on March 15, 2026, at the Dolby Theatre in Los Angeles, proved to be a night filled with huge wins, shocking outcomes, and trending moments that went viral on social media platforms even days after the event. From huge wins for blockbuster movies to awkward celebrity shout-outs, the event is a testament to why the Oscars are one of the most popular events in the entertainment industry.

The awards ceremony this year focused on two major movies, namely One Battle After Another and Sinners, while also creating some shocking moments with actor Timothée Chalamet and a controversy that had been brewing for weeks.

The Biggest Winners of the Night

One of the biggest success stories of the night was Paul Thomas Anderson’s film *One Battle After Another*. The film had an astonishing performance, taking home six Academy Awards, including Best Picture, Best Director, and Best Adapted Screenplay.

This is the first time Anderson has won an Oscar, putting an end to a long period of nominations without a win for the renowned director.

Although *One Battle After Another* took home all the major awards, another film also had an astonishing performance at the ceremony: Ryan Coogler’s supernatural drama *Sinners*. The film went into the ceremony with a record-breaking 16 nominations, the most a single film has ever received in Oscar history.

Despite not taking home the Best Picture award, Sinners had a remarkable night at the Oscars. The movie took home four awards, including Best Actor for Michael B. Jordan and Best Original Screenplay for Coogler.

Jordan’s performance as twin brothers in the movie, which is set in the 1930s, received a standing ovation from the audience. In his acceptance speech, he thanked fans and reiterated the need to inspire the next generation.

The movie also made history in another category. Cinematographer Autumn Durald Arkapaw made history by becoming the first woman and the first Black person to win the Best Cinematography award for her work on the movie.

On the other hand, composer Ludwig Göransson won the Oscar for Best Original Score for the same movie, which is his third Academy Award.

Major Acting Winners

The acting awards also had large moments at the event.

  • Best Actor: Michael B. Jordan (Sinners)
  • Best Actress: Jessie Buckley (Hamnet)
  • Best Supporting Actor: Sean Penn
  • Best Supporting Actress: Amy Madigan

Buckley’s win was especially historic since she became the first Irish woman to take home the Best Actress award, which is a milestone for Irish actors in Hollywood.

These awards showed the diversity of acting talent that the Academy honored this year.

Films That Fell Short

As with every Oscars ceremony, there were some films that left the night disappointed that had been highly anticipated.

Despite having a large number of nominations, Sinners won four awards but lost 12 categories, which is a record for the most losses by a single film at the Oscars.

Other films that were nominated, such as Marty Supreme and Sentimental Value, also did not win many of the awards that they had been predicted to win earlier in the year.

This is what makes the Oscars so exciting every year. Even films that are highly anticipated can leave with fewer awards than they had been predicted to win.

The Timothée Chalamet Drama

While the awards themselves were certainly exciting, one of the most popular moments of the evening had very little to do with the awards themselves.

During the opening monologue of the ceremonies, host Conan O’Brien made a joke about actor Timothée Chalamet, based on comments the actor had made earlier in the year about ballet and opera.

In February, Chalamet had faced backlash for comments he made during a public forum in which he stated that “no one cares” about ballet and opera anymore.

O’Brien spoke about the controversy in front of millions of people at the Oscars. According to reports, he made a joke about the situation and said that people were upset because Chalamet had “left out jazz.”

The camera quickly cut to Chalamet in the audience, laughing awkwardly at the reaction of the crowd.

That wasn’t the only moment that referenced the controversy. Later in the show, a filmmaker accepting the award for Best Live Action Short criticized Chalamet’s earlier comments about traditional arts in his speech.

The comment received a mixed reaction from the crowd, with some people cheering and others reportedly booing.

Minutes later, footage of the moment was posted on social media, making Chalamet one of the most talked-about people of the night, even though he didn’t win an award.

Political and Cultural Moments

Similar to other recent Oscars events, the 2026 Oscars also featured political and cultural commentary.

The documentary “Mr. Nobody Against Putin” received the award for Best Documentary Feature, focusing on international political issues and the conflict between Russia.

Some of the winners also took the opportunity to discuss other social issues and the role of storytelling in times of political unrest.

This has become a common occurrence at the Oscars, where the industry uses the global platform to address issues outside of the film industry.

Why the Oscars Still Matter

In a world where streaming and online content are the norm, there have been questions about whether the Oscars still have the same level of cultural impact that they once had.

However, this year’s Oscars have shown that the awards still have the ability to make big cultural moments. Whether it’s historic wins, emotional speeches, or celebrity moments, the Oscars are still shaping the conversation about film and entertainment.

For movie makers, an Academy Award win can have a huge impact on the film’s legacy. For fans, the Oscars are still a celebration of storytelling.

A Night Full of Moments

The 2026 Oscars offered all the things that audiences want from the biggest night in Hollywood.

The Academy Awards continue to be one of the most popular events in the entertainment industry because of the memorable speeches, shocking winners, and enough drama to go around.
