Qatar Shot Down Two Iranian SU-24 Jets

In a significant escalation of the widening Middle East conflict, Qatar’s Ministry of Defence announced on March 2, 2026, that Qatari fighter aircraft had shot down two Iranian Su-24 fighter jets over its airspace, marking one of the clearest signs that the ongoing war between Iran and U.S.-Israeli forces is now directly impacting other Gulf states.

This announcement had occurred as there was more Iranian missile and drone strikes that were destroying multiple areas across the region as a whole. “Qatar’s air force has “successfully shot down” two Iranian fighter aircraft, the country’s government says, as the fallout from the United States and Israeli attacks on Iran, and Iranian retaliation, grows across the wider Middle East,” according to AlJazeera.

The SU-24 fighter jets that were sent by the Iranians were destroyed rather quickly, before they were able to inflict any damage upon Qatari territory. It seems that the interception underscores rising defensive activity by Gulf air forces amid intensifying hostilities.

Escalation

Air defense systems across the region have been on high alert, intercepting large numbers of missiles and drones to protect population centers and strategic facilities. “The United Kingdom Maritime Trade Operations (UKMTO) reported an incident on Monday at the port of Bahrain, where a vessel was struck by two unknown projectiles, sparking a fire,” according to The Jerusalem Post.

Doha reported intercepting waves of incoming Iranian missiles and drones targeting its territory, including near the Al Udeid Air Base, a key U.S. military base.

Regional Impact

Iran’s bombardment of Gulf states has already had wide economic consequences. Qatar, one of the world’s leading exporters of liquefied natural gas (LNG), announced it was halting LNG production at its Ras Laffan facilities after drone strikes damaged energy infrastructure, a development that sent global gas and oil prices sharply higher.

A Conflict Spreading

Until recently a conflict mostly between Iran and U.S./Israeli forces, the war’s escalation into Gulf state airspace marks a new and dangerous phase.
