Violence Increasing In Mexico

Safety concerns in Mexico have rapidly increased in the past recent days following a major military operation that resulted in the death of Nemesio “El Mencho” Oseguera Cervantes the notorious leader of the Cártel Jalisco Nueva Generación (CJNG). His death sparked heavy retaliation from the CJNG with casualties that included road blockages and a shootout with Mexican police. The catastrophic event unfolded in Jalisco and other neighboring states, which have exacerbated safety concerns. The police have confirmed incidents such as prison breaks and violent confrontations have disrupted local travel and daily life.

Safety Measures Created In Mexico

In response to safety concerns, the Mexican government, the U.S. Department of State, and foreign ministries have issued a nationwide security alert. American and Canadian advisories have also recommended that citizens in affected regions stay indoors and avoid non-essential travel. Specific states such as Jalisco, Tamaulipas, Michoacán, Guerrero and others have been advised to find shelter and stay away from any violence caused by the CJNG or the Mexican Police.

Before the recent incident there have been travel advisories for Mexico due to organized crime, kidnapping and violent crime associated with cartels. There are  areas designated as Level 4 and do not travel. Other parts in Mexico are listed as increased caution.

What Travelers Should Know

There are massive risks traveling to Jalisco and other nearby states. Tourists in major resort areas like Cancún, Playa del Carmen and Los Cabos have not been affected by the situation but conditions can change instantly.

Delayed Or Canceled Flights

If someone is considering traveling, it is important to check official government travel advisories, monitor local news, and be prepared for delays or cancellation in flights. Travelers should take safety precautions particularly when moving between cities or using public highways. The public is also advised to have fully charged phone devices given the road closure circumstances. For safety concerns the public is advised to prepare for shelter in secure places.
