Samsung to Discontinue Galaxy Z TriFold

In a shocking twist of events for the tech world, Samsung is reportedly discontinuing their highly touted Samsung Galaxy Z TriFold, just three months after the smartphone’s launch in the United States. “The company will start by ceasing sales of the device in Korea, where it has been on sale since December. Samsung plans to discontinue the device in the United States once it clears its inventory,” according to MacRumors.

This is reportedly one of the shortest product cycles for a flagship smartphone in recent years. The decision to discontinue the smartphone will undoubtedly spark much debate about the future of innovative smartphone designs.

The Samsung Galaxy Z TriFold is a smartphone that was touted as a revolutionary device with a dual-hinge mechanism that enabled the smartphone to convert into a tablet.

The smartphone launched in South Korea in December 2025 and arrived in the United States on January 30, 2026, with a price tag of about $2,899. The smartphone is reportedly being phased out with production ceasing and the remaining inventory being cleared.

Limited Availability from the Start

From the outset, the Galaxy Z TriFold was never intended as a mass-market device. In this regard, Samsung has been cautious in its rollout strategy. For instance, the device has been made available in limited regions. Moreover, the device has been sold mainly by the company itself.

The Galaxy Z TriFold has been sold in a limited quantity of just 6,000 units in the United States. This also points to the device’s intended use as a niche product. Furthermore, the device has been selling out rapidly since its release. In some regions, the device sold out within minutes of its release.

These sales could also be an indicator of the device’s demand. However, they are more an outcome of the limited supply. “Samsung’s Galaxy Z TriFold went on sale in the US in late January, but a new report suggests it may have already been discontinued. Despite such a short availability window, this doesn’t mean Samsung considers the phone a failure,” according to PC Mag.

High Costs and Low Profitability

One of the main reasons for this decision seems to be the cost involved in manufacturing the TriFold. The design of this device is extremely complex, with three display panels and two hinges. This made it extremely challenging to manufacture this device within the current technological capabilities.

This made it extremely challenging to manufacture this device within the current technological capabilities. It is also suggested that due to increased costs in various components, this device simply became unsustainable from a business perspective.

This essentially made the Galaxy Z TriFold a technological marvel instead of a viable product in its own right.

A Concept Device Disguised as a Flagship

Industry experts have also opined that the TriFold was more a “concept device” than a consumer product. This is also evident from the fact that the product’s production run was low, and the product itself was priced high.

It seems that Samsung itself used the TriFold as a means to test and explore newer forms.

While this is not an unusual practice in the technology world, where companies often use limited production runs as a means to test newer technologies, the discontinuation of the TriFold is also an indication that Samsung may have stretched the boundaries of technology too much in the TriFold.

Technical Challenges and Durability Concerns

Apart from the cost factor, the TriFold also had issues with its durability and usability. Folding smartphones are already quite challenging for engineers. The second fold also increases the engineering challenges.

The initial reports suggested that the device had issues with the screen’s durability. One user reported that the display had failed after a month of usage. Although this may not be a common problem for the device, it does show the challenges faced by engineers in designing such innovative products.

The device also lacked some of the expected features for the price. For instance, the device did not have a stylus because of the flexible display.

No Clear Successor in Sight

There are no confirmations from Samsung regarding the development of a successor for the Galaxy Z TriFold, with reports indicating that the second-generation device is not in the works.

This, therefore, shows that Samsung could be taking a step back in terms of the development of the tri-fold technology, as they are likely to focus on the development of the more successful foldable phones like the Galaxy Z Fold series and the Galaxy Z Flip series.

However, the fact that the likes of Huawei are still exploring the idea of the tri-fold technology shows that the idea still has a future, albeit with further development in the near future.

What This Means for the Foldable Market

The discontinuation of the Galaxy Z TriFold does not represent the death of foldable technology. Instead, it represents the difficulties associated with commercializing foldable technology.

Foldable smartphones have already come a long way since they first appeared ten years ago. From being fragile and experimental technology, foldable smartphones are now part of the mainstream. The TriFold represents the next evolution of foldable technology. It also represents the difficulties associated with commercializing foldable technology.

The Galaxy Z TriFold may represent a collector’s item for consumers. For the industry as a whole, the Galaxy Z TriFold represents a valuable learning curve.

A Bold Idea That Fell Short—For Now

At the end of it all, however, it’s safe to say that the tale of the Galaxy Z TriFold represents a clash between aspiration and pragmatism.

The decision to end the product after a mere three months in the market represents a shift in pragmatism and a move away from experimentalism and more towards profitability and reliability.

However, it’s worth noting that the impact of the TriFold may not be entirely forgotten in a hurry. The technologies and learnings from this device may well shape the future of foldable smartphones in a positive way.

This is especially true in a world that’s constantly in motion and constantly evolving.
