A New Era of Instant Shopping
Yet again, Amazon is speeding up the rate at which online shopping is conducted in the country. It has launched a new option that allows consumers to get 1-hour and 3-hour delivery in the U.S. This move may be a game-changer in the way that consumers will look at online shopping in general.
This move by Amazon is a continuation of its long-standing commitment to speed in online shopping. However, this move takes it a step further in that instead of same-day delivery or next-day delivery, it is offering near-immediate delivery for a variety of items that consumers need.
According to an executive at Amazon, “We just try to make customers’ lives a little easier and add a little value to what we offer.”
What the New Delivery Options Include
The service now reaches more than 90,000 products, ranging from household necessities and health and beauty products to toys and cleaning supplies, as well as some electronic products.Customers have the option of:
- 1-Hour Delivery – this option is currently available in select metro areas.
- 3-Hour Delivery – this option is currently available in more than 2,000 cities and towns.
The service is currently available in major cities such as Los Angeles and Chicago, as well as in smaller cities such as Boise.
The cost of the service depends on the membership of the customer. Prime members are charged a lower fee compared to non-members.
A retail analyst explained the move by Amazon as “This is about collapsing the gap between online and in-store shopping.”
Technology
However, it is not just a case of having faster delivery drivers; it is about having a logistics system that is finely tuned and optimized for delivery within a matter of hours.
For example, within its delivery centers, Amazon has implemented a number of systems to ensure that rapid delivery is made a priority. This includes special stations and labeling that help sort and speed up delivery times.
Artificial intelligence is also being used in a number of ways to help speed up delivery times. This is being done by using algorithms that predict what a customer may need in a certain area and stocking that item locally so that it can be delivered within a matter of minutes.
One such expert said that “The real innovation isn’t the delivery—it’s having the product already nearby.”
Competition Driving the Push
However, Amazon’s latest move is not an isolated incident. The company is also facing increased competition from other retailers such as Walmart and Target. These two companies have been investing heavily in fast delivery options.
For instance, Walmart is offering same-day delivery to most households in the US. The company is also investing in drone delivery options.
Target is also enhancing its same-day delivery options through its Shipt service.
The competition is forcing these companies to engage in what is being referred to as a “speed war.”
According to an industry consultant, “Fast delivery is no longer a perk—it’s becoming the baseline.”
Expanding Beyond Big Cities
A notable feature of Amazon’s rollout is its penetration into the smaller towns and the rural areas. Ultra-fast delivery has always been limited to the more populous areas.
However, Amazon is investing more than $4 billion in its infrastructure and bringing the promise of faster and ultra-fast delivery to thousands of smaller communities.
The rollout of the 3-hour service in more than 2,000 locations is a testament to this. It is a sign that the company is moving towards making ultra-fast delivery the norm and not the exception.
A spokesperson for the company said, “Customers everywhere expect speed, not just in big cities.”
The Cost of Convenience
Although these new delivery options provide unprecedented speed, there is a cost associated with them. Consumers have to pay extra fees, which are in addition to their purchases, with faster delivery services being more expensive, especially for those who do not have Prime memberships.
There is concern about how well this service will be accepted by consumers. While there may be those who take advantage of this, others may choose to use their free same-day or next-day delivery services.
There is concern about how this could affect small businesses. Faster delivery could make it even more difficult for them to compete, especially if they have to deal with in-person shopping.
One advocate, concerned about small businesses, said, “When delivery becomes instant, local stores lose one of their last advantages.”
Redefining Consumer Expectations

This is part of a larger trend, one where waiting is no longer an option. As technology becomes more prevalent, so do our expectations of instant gratification.
Amazon has already tested even faster services, such as 30-minute delivery trials, suggesting that waiting even a few hours could soon be a thing of the past.
This is not only changing e-commerce, but retail as a whole. Physical storefronts, which have traditionally been defined by their ability to offer instant access to products, now have to compete with online services that offer the same, if not faster, experience.
The Future of Fast Delivery
It is likely that Amazon’s new options for 1-hour and 3-hour delivery are merely the tip of the iceberg. As the infrastructure develops and technology continues to progress, Amazon is likely to take this service further.
For the time being, however, this is a major milestone in the growth and development of internet shopping as a whole.
“This is a major step towards a world where the question isn’t ‘when will it arrive?’ but ‘how fast can it get here?’”
