Why Spirit Airlines Is Going Bankrupt For The Second Time

Spirit Airlines is going bankrupt for the second time in under a year. After filing for Chapter 11 protection in August 2025, they have been working with lenders and creditors to reorganize its operations. They are known to be one of the most affordable and sustainable carriers.

Will Spirit Airlines Go Out Of Business?

They have reorganized their efforts after years of financial difficulty. The airline’s low cost business model is struggling under rising operating costs. They tried to propose a merge with JetBlue in 2024 but failed. Although they had initially applied for bankruptcy in early 2025, they warned that it might not survive another year without additional funding, which is why the Chapter 11 filing of this year occurred.

You Can Still Book Flights Through Spirit Airlines

Throughout the bankruptcy process, they is still continuing flights. Even with their financial circumstances, bookings and loyalty programs are still in tact. The hallmark of Chapter 11 allows firms to keep operating while reorganizing. They have secured debtor in possession that will finance and negotiate terms with key creditors that will significantly reduce their debt from roughly $7.4 billion to about $2.1 billion once the restructuring is complete.

Their turnaround plan is shrinking its fleet and network. They are hoping to match profitable demand, selling aircraft, and optimizing routes. They also plan to introduce more premium offerings along with its low fare options.

Spirit Airlines Will Continue

They are now expecting to exit Chapter 11 by late spring or in the early summer of 2026. They will be a lot smaller but more financially stable. They plan to offload older aircrafts and negotiating labor contracts. They hope to maintain its reputation for budget-friendly fares. Management remains positive that these strategic cuts will allow Spirit Airlines to become more financially stable. Even with its recent bankruptcy filings Spirit Airlines continues to evolve and progress as low fare airline company.
