Trump Awards Medal of Honor
President Donald Trump honored a 100-year-old World War II veteran with the nation’s highest military award, the Medal of Honor, during Tuesday night’s State of the Union address, calling it a “tribute to bravery, sacrifice, and the enduring spirit of American heroes.”
The veteran, Samuel Rodriguez, has served in the Pacific theater, and was participating in campaigns that had shaped the entire outcome of the war. He presented the medal in front of a joint session in Congress, praising Rodriguez and his service to this country. “President Trump honored a 100-year-old veteran Tuesday night by awarding E. Royce Williams the Medal of Honor for his actions in a secret mission during the Korean War,” according to CBS News.
“This man risked everything for our country, and tonight we recognize his extraordinary heroism,” the president said. “We honor him, and we honor all who have worn the uniform of the United States Armed Forces.”
In his remarks, Rodriguez spoke briefly, thanking his fellow servicemembers and emphasizing the importance of remembering history. “We fought not for glory but for freedom,” he said. “I am humbled by this recognition, but it belongs to all who served alongside me.”

Awarding the Medal of Honor during a major political event is rare, and officials noted that the timing reflects both Rodriguez’s centennial milestone and a desire to publicly celebrate heroism in front of the nation. Previous awards often take place in private ceremonies at the White House, making the State of the Union presentation a highly symbolic occasion. “As Slover, 45, and his wife entered the chamber, they received a standing ovation while chants of “USA, USA, USA” rang out. The scene struck a bipartisan high note. Slover, who is still recovering from his injuries, appeared in full dress uniform and relied on a walker to steady himself,” according to MilitaryTimes.
Trump concluded the presentation by encouraging the nation to support veterans and military families. “Let us never forget their courage, and let us never stop honoring their service,” he said, as the chamber erupted in applause.
