United States President Donald J. Trump stated, “I wish you could explain to me what the hell’s going on with the mind of the public, because we have the right policy,” in a speech to Republicans warning them to maintain control of Congress.
Throughout his speech, Trump touted his achievements in cracking down on migration, imposing tariffs, lowering drug costs, and his tax-and-spending bill. The President urged Republican lawmakers to do the same telling them all they had to do was “sell it.”
Since taking the Oval Office in January, Trump has experienced little resistance from Republicans, but a loss of either chamber could dramatically alter his ability to further his agenda. As it stands, the path forward for the President is already tougher due to GOP divisions and the slim Republican majority. Additionally, a Democrat-run Congress could open the President up for new investigations. Trump was impeached twice during his first presidential term.
Rep. Daniel Goldman, who was lead counsel during Trump’s first impeachment trial, said Democrats have been “running a tab of potential violations of the law and the Constitution by this administration.” He added that if Democrats win House majority, they will prioritize those investigations accordingly. “I am eager to take on that role again, if the investigations lead ultimately to evidence that supports impeachment. I think that that sill remains a critical form of accountability.” However, moving forward with investigations could consume lots of time and garner little results as it is not likely they would obtain the necessary two-thirds on the Senate.
Currently, Trump’s approval rating stands at 36 percent in a Gallup poll conducted at the end of 2025. The high cost of living, Trump promised to fix in 2024 is at the forefront of voters’ minds.
The Trump administration is already on shaky ground with American voters. Much of the government funds run out at the end of January 2026, threatening a shutdown at the beginning of February. Additionally, people are questioning the recent capture and arrest of Venezuelan leader Nicolas Maduro as well as the Obamacare vote with open enrollment scheduled to close in a few days. Although, Trump insists his stand will be embraced by the American people.
