US-Ecuadorian Operation
A sweeping new joint security campaign between the United States and Ecuador is underway, as both governments announce coordinated operations targeting what they describe as “narco-terrorist” networks that have destabilized the Andean nation. “U.S. Southern Command in a Tuesday night statement said the operations targeted “Designated Terrorist Organizations” and hailed the cooperation as “a powerful example of the commitment of partners in Latin America and the Caribbean to combat the scourge of narco-terrorism,” according to Axios News.
Drug trafficking groups with ties to Mexican cartels and Colombian armed organizations have exploited the country’s Pacific ports, porous borders and dollarized economy to move cocaine to markets in North America and Europe. The violence associated with these operations, including assassinations, prison riots and car bombings, has surged dramatically.
Narco-Terrorism
By using the term “narco-terrorism,” officials aim to underscore the political and psychological dimensions of the violence. Beyond drug trafficking, authorities say gangs are attempting to exert territorial control, influence public institutions and destabilize democratic governance.
Expanded U.S Role
The U.S, which has worked with Ecuador when it came down to counternarcotics through intelligence training, has now decided to expand it’s role within the region. U.S military advisors and law enforcement personnel are trying their best to support Ecuador when it comes down to surveillance technology, strategic planning and many other things to ensure this operation is done correctly and quickly.
Intelligence-sharing platforms are being used and integrated much more closely, and U.S aircraft are assisting the corridors that are typically used for these illegal deals to be done. That way, they are able to counter it in case it does happen within their presence.
Ecuador’s Strategic Importance
For Ecuador, the stakes are high. Once considered a secondary transit country, it has become a major logistics hub for cocaine originating in Colombia and Peru. Many criminal groups and rival factions have fought a lot of very bloody turf wars, which was contributing to an ever increasing homicide rate that has ranked among the highest in the region.
The infiltration of prisons by gang leaders has further complicated state control. Riots and hostage situations have coordinated a lot of violence within the detencion centers in Ecuador. Many drug traffickers have used a major port, like Guayaquil, to carry out their illegal acts, and hide drugs within storage containers that are to be shipped out across the country.
Government Strategy
Ecuadorian Defense Minister Gian Carlo Loffredo described the entire operation as a big step to get back what was once theirs, something that they have not had in a long time. He has also made sure to stress that the operations are designed to disrupt the networks that they are connected to, and many financial networks as well.
Officials are making sure they say the strategy involves targeting soldiers that are on foot, but also targeting coordinators who are the ones facilitating these shipments that were being taken out.

Controversy
The expansion of U.S. involvement is not without controversy. Critics within Ecuador warn of potential sovereignty concerns and question whether a security-heavy approach can address the underlying social and economic factors that fuel gang recruitment. “”We commend the men and women of the Ecuadorian armed forces for their unwavering commitment to this fight, demonstrating courage and resolve through continued actions against narco-terrorists in their country,” Southern Command Gen. Francis L. Donovan said in the post,” according to USA Today.
There are also historical sensitivities. U.S. forces previously operated from a forward operating location at the Manta air base until 2009, when then-President Rafael Correa declined to renew the agreement. The renewed visibility of U.S. security cooperation has prompted debate over how far the partnership should extend and what safeguards should be in place.
Implications
Regional implications are significant. Neighboring Colombia and Peru are watching closely, as trafficking routes often shift in response to enforcement pressure.
After years in which migration dominated U.S.–Latin America relations, counternarcotics and security cooperation are again at the forefront.
Early Results
On the ground in Ecuador, the immediate focus is tactical: seizing shipments, arresting suspects and restoring order in volatile prison systems. Authorities report early successes, including the interception of multi-ton cocaine consignments and the detention of alleged gang leaders. Whether these gains can be sustained remains uncertain.
As operations are being carried out, the partnership that is being done will be scrutinized across the world. This entire operation is sure to shape Ecuador’s trajectory as a country, as well as U.S’s involvement in certain pieces of organized crime.
