U.S. Congressman Refuses to Resign

A U.S. congressman is refusing to step down after allegations surfaced that he engaged in an inappropriate relationship with a congressional staffer, a controversy that has sparked calls for an ethics investigation and renewed debate over conduct rules on Capitol Hill. “Speaker Mike Johnson said Wednesday he believes Rep. Tony Gonzales’ primary election, now six days away, will be a referendum on the serious sexual harassment allegations plaguing the Texas Republican,” according to Politico News.

In a statement released Tuesday, he said he would “not resign” and intends to “fully cooperate with any review of the facts.”

“I have made personal mistakes,” the congressman said, “but I have not broken the law, nor have I misused taxpayer resources.” He added that he remains focused on serving his constituents and advancing legislative priorities. “Gonzales has been accused of sending sexually explicit text messages in which he appeared to pressure the senior staffer to share images of herself and, eventually, coerced her into a sexual relationship,” according to The Guardian.

House rules within the U.S, prohibit members from engaging in sexual relationships with staff they supervise. While the congressman has not publicly detailed whether the staffer worked directly under him, several colleagues have called for clarification and a formal inquiry by the House Committee on Ethics.

Speaker of the House leadership said the matter would be reviewed according to established procedures. “These are serious allegations,” a U.S spokesperson said. “The House Ethics Committee will determine the appropriate course of action.”

The congressman’s district office reported receiving a surge of calls and emails in the wake of the allegations. Some constituents have urged him to resign, arguing that the situation undermines public trust. Others have defended him, saying the matter is personal and does not necessarily affect his legislative work.

If the Ethics Committee launches a formal investigation, it could review communications, employment records, and financial disclosures to determine whether House rules were violated. Possible outcomes range from dismissal of the complaint to reprimand, censure, or recommendation of further action.
