Scary Cartel Violence For U.S. Tourist

American tourists vacationing in Mexico have been caught in between the crossfire of the Mexican Military and the CJNG Cartel. After a massive outbreak immersed in resort areas, this has left many surrounded in the chaos. There have been an increase in flight cancellations in Mexico. A warning from the U.S. Government for U.S. tourists to take shelter has been set in place.

The massive influx of violence began on Sunday, February 22, 2026 when the Mexican military killed Nemesio “El Mencho” Oseguera Cervantes. The leader of the Jalisco New Generation Cartel (CJNG) was shot and killed during a military operation in Tapalpa, Jalisco. The operation was a huge success against one of Mexico’s most powerful drug cartels, but immediate retaliation was emerged across multiple states including a very popular tourist spot in Puerto Vallarta and Guadalajara.

Rising Violence and Panic

At this time of the year Puerto Vallarta is beautiful Pacific beach resort packed with many foreign visitors. For many this year, it wasn’t the vacation they were hoping for. Many U.S. tourists were left with confusion and fear as cartel gunmen responded to El Mencho’s death with massive retaliation.  Multiple U.S. tourist accounts, vehicles and buses were canceled. Many of the roads in Mexico were blocked and set on fire, and the beautiful blue sky was covered in smoke. U.S. tourists have stated that it was more of a war zone rather than a vacation.

A Dallas resident Adryan Moorefield, who was attempting to return home from Puerto Vallarta, told CNN that he woke up on Sunday to news of chaos and a view of armed gunman.  Many members of the CJNG had torched buses, blocked roads and attacked with massive firepower. For the U.S. tourist  “It was such a complete shocker … we thought this would be a no-brainer place to come and do a quick an easy beach vacation.”

Another U.S. tourist Jim Beck described leaving his hotel for breakfast only to find “taxi cabs blown up all over town, blocking the roads.” Within moments of the outbreak a lot of people began running back to their hotel rooms.

Many families including those with young children also came forward with fearing descriptions of the outbreak. A U.S. tourist mother sheltering in her vacation rental told reporters she and her husband were forced to stay inside with their kids watching and listening to the chaos unfold. The U.S. tourist mother stated “It’s really scary,” describing large amounts of smoke and the overbearing smell of burning rubber.
