Former wrestler and “X-Men” actor Tyler Mane has been diagnosed with a “super rare” case of breast cancer and urges men to get checked. In his post, Mane shared a statistic: “One in 750 men will be diagnosed with breast cancer in their lifetime…” In the caption, he stated, “Only 1% of breast cancer are men.”
Mane’s Message
Tyler went on to talk about how this type of cancer is hardly talked about, so it’s usually not caught until it’s in the later stages. This is something that he wishes to change. Mane then admitted that it was because of his wife that his was caught early. If she hadn’t pushed him to get the lump removed, his circumstances could have been different.
In the caption, Mane shared how he thought about keeping his diagnosis a secret, but the rarity of this type of cancer kept him from doing so. So much so that Tyler’s doctor even dismissed the lump at first. It was the insistence of Mane’s wife that brought the cancer to light.
Type of Male Breast Cancer
The two forms of the disease most commonly found in men are ductal carcinoma in situ and ductal carcinoma. Furthermore, around 1 in 100 breast cancer diagnoses are found in males in the US, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). Invasive ductal carcinoma starts in the ducts and grows outward into surrounding breast tissue. When the cancer cells line the ducts in the chest but have not spread to surrounding tissue, it’s called ductal carcinoma.
Risk Factors
The risk factors include whether breast cancer runs in the family, or they have either BRCA1 or BRCA2 genes. Additional risk factors include being over 50, exposure to hormone and radiation therapy treatments, obesity, liver disease, and certain conditions that affect the testicles, according to the CDC.
Unlike women, there are no screening recommendations for breast cancer screening for men. For example, for women who are at risk of developing breast cancer, it is recommended to get a mammogram every two years.
The symptoms of breast cancer in men include abnormalities around the breast area, including a lump or swelling, nipple discharge, redness or flaky skin, and pain in the nipple area, according to the CDC.
In his post, Mane stated he had started chemotherapy and provided no other information about his health journey.
